UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK G. W'ALKER AND GEORGE J. BAUM, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
OOUNTER-FIXTU RE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 551,459, dated December 17, 1895.
Application filed February 11, 1895. Serial No. 538,004.. (No model.)
To 60% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FREDERICK G. WALK- ER and GEORGE J. BAUM, citizens of the United States, and residents of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Counter-Fixture; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, true, and exact description thereof.
Our invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of a' receiver for canes, umbrellas, the. to be used in connection with counters.
That the invention may be fully understood and seen reference will be had to the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents an inverted plan view of said receiver, shown in connection with the under side of a counter and in operative position in relation to said counter. Fig. 2 illustrates said receiver when withdrawn in under said counter, and Fig. 3 is a side view of said article.
Like letters of reference denote like parts in the drawings and specification.
This receiver or holder of umbrellas, parasols, (he. consists of a pivoted bar A provided with duplex spring-actuated gates B B. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) At a said bar is pivotally secured to the under side of counters, and by means of the pivot 12 at or near the front end 0 of said bar the gates are secured in operative connection therewith. Near the pivot 11 each of said gates B B is provided with a lug or finger-plate (Z. By means of said plates d the gates can readily be turned to assume a position as indicated by the dotted lines e (see Figs. Land 3) to admit of placing umbrellas, (inc. into the loops F,which are formed by said gates B B and the curved arms 9 of said bar. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) Springs h are applied to automatically close said gates the moment the plates are relieved. It is also the resisting action of said springs which retains the gates in locked position or in such manner as to encircle the articles placed inside thereof. Fig. 1 illustrates said holder in adjusted position for use, while Fig. 2 demonstrates the disposal thereof when not in use. A segment 0 is employed for support of the bar A. Said segment or support is or maybe secured to the under side of the counter in the manner as shown. Notchesj are provided at or near the ends of said support. (See Figs. 2 and 3.) The barA engages into said notches when adjusted to the positions as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 but a slight lifting at or of the outer end of said bar is required for disengaging the latter from said notches. Thus the bar cannot accidentally change position until when adjusted as desired.
The lug 6 shown in connection with one of the arms serves as a means for detecting the positions of this receiver when withdrawn in under or beneath the counter.
To adjust the receiver into position for use a hook it is arranged at the front end of the bar A, whereby the bar can conveniently be drawnfromout of the counter. Furthermore bags, parcels, (he, can he hung upon said hook, and in disposing of articles in this manner they are not so easily forgotten as when lying or laid upon the counter.
WVe claim- The combination with a counter of the pivoted bar A, having spring actuated gates B B pivotally attached at the front end thereof and a hook formed in connection with said front end and the support 0 having notches j near the terminals thereof to receive and retain said bar, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we hereunto set our hands and seals in presence of twowitnesses.
FREDERICK G. WALKER. [11.8.] GEORGE J. BAUM. [It 3.] itnesses B. F. EIBLER, J. G. Gnnrvn.
