ANKLE-BRACE FOR SKATES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters area No. 551,444, dated December 17, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACKSON 0. LEE, of Fremont, in the county of Dodge and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and usei ul'lmprovements in Ankle-Braces for Skates and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in ankle-braces for skates; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a view in rear elevation, partly in section.

A represents a metal rod pivotally secured at one end to the runner of a skate, said rod being bent outwardly a sufficient distance to clear the heel-plate of the skate and thence upwardly in an upright position, as shown in the drawings. The part of rod A resting against and secured to the skate-runner is of sufficient length to afiord an extended bearing, whereby the proper upright position of the remaining portion of said rod is assured.

To the upper end of rod A are riveted protectors B O, the former of which is adapted to partially or wholly encircle the leg, while the latter is adapted to rest against the inner surface of rod A, the lower end of said protector 0 being loosely mounted on rod A, so that it can accommodate itself to the bulged portion a of rod A, said bulged portion being adapted to receive the ankle-bone and prevent same from being rubbed by contact with said rod.

Protector B is provided near its ends with oblong slits b for the reception of strap D, by means of which latter the ankle-brace is secured in its operative position.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with a skate, of a brace means for pivotally connecting it direct to the runner, said brace bowed outwardly between its ends to receive the wearers ankle, a protector strap secured at one end to the brace and having loose sliding connection at its opposite end with said brace, substantially as set forth.
