SHARPENER FOR SHEARS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,292, dated December 10, 1895.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of C-uyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpeners for Shears; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for sharpening shears, scissors, and other similar articles; and it has for its object to improve, simplify, and cheapen the cost of construction thereof over the existing prior state of the art, and at the same time to pro vide a device which will be light and durable, and can be conveniently used about the house or carried in the pocket for use elsewhere whenever desired, and which will perform expeditiously and effectually its function as a sharpener of the class of articles designated.

ith these ends in View the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more in detail described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, to which reference is had and which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, of same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a rectangular block, near one or the right end of which is formed a deep vertical groove 13, and through this portion of the block, which is smaller and forms substantially a separate portion from the main body of the block by such formation of groove, is formed, in a direction at right angles to said groove B, a perforation G, a continuation of which is also formed in the inner face of the adjacent end of the main or body portion of the block, and in the left-hand wall of the groove, and which is in alignment with the section of the perforation in the smaller portion of the block. lVitln'n these sections of the perforation O is firmly but detachably inserted a rectangular sharpening bar or blade D, arranged obliquely therein and at an angle coincident with the perforation, and also at right angles to and extending across the groove 13. Over this angular and obliquelyarranged bar or blade D, the face of the shears is laid, care being taken that the face of the shears is laid to the left-hand side of the groove when the shears is then drawn over the blade D several times toward the operator, the operator holding the main or body portion of the block in his left hand and drawing the shears over the sharpener with his right, thus quickly and efiectually completing the sharpening of the shears.

If desired the cutter or blade D can be with drawn from the perforation O, and another substituted if deemed necessary. From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation of my device will be obvious and fur ther description herein is considered unnec essary.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The rectangular block having the vertical groove formed therein, the cutter 0r blade arranged obliquely, and at an angle coincident with the erforation, within the block, and seated wlthin the perforation, and transversely to the vertical groove, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
