SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,555, dated November 26, 1895. Application filed me 22, 1895. Serial No. 553,704. on model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PAUL FLEMMING COX, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Distributers, (Case B;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in typedistributing machines; and its object is to enable a plurality of different-sized types or types of two or more fonts to be simultaneously distributed by one machine at one operation, thereby doubling the output or capacity of the distributer and dispensing with a separate machine .for the different-sized fonts, resulting in great economy in the outfit of a printing establishment.
Nearly all newspaper ofiices employ two or more sizes of type in one dress, and where distributing-machines have been used two or more have been required, or at least two distinct operations of the machine and double time consumed in distributing the types. The economy and advantages of myinvention when understood will therefore be obvious.
The invention is especially designed for use in a machine like that shown and described in my application for Letters Patent filed June 22, 1895, Serial No. 553,704, but is not limited to such application, as, once known, mechanics can readily adapt it to other forms of distributing-machines; and I do not consider the invention restricted to employment in connection with rotary distributers.
The invention, therefore, is best defined in the claims, and the following is a description of one form thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention and so much of a distributer as is necessary to clearly comprehend the same.

D designates a disk having two series of slots 19 c in it corresponding to and adapted to register with channels B C in cylinder A. Over or beside these slots are secured testplates b 0, (see Fig. 3,) by which only the proper types are permitted to enter the slots. Below this test-plate are series of type-holders E E, one for each channel B C, adapted to receive the types distributed through slots 1) c.
The disk D, with the test-plates, is rotated by means of a pawl F, (on a rocking arm F,) engaging a ratchet d, attached to the disk. These parts being substantially similar in construction and operation to like parts in the distributer shown in my application above referred to need no detailed description herein. The disk is moved sufficiently to bring the slots b a into register with the channels B C at each movement. Hence types may be distributed simultaneously from all the channels B C. Obviously, however, 'the present invention would be embodied in the machine if the test plates were stationary and the channels B C moved.
The channels B C could be arranged side by side equidistant from the center of the cylinder, if desired; but this would necessitate different notchings of the type-font, so that type of one font would not become mixed with types of the other font, and to avoid this complication I prefer to have the series of slots for types of different fonts arranged at different distances from the center of the cylinder. By doing this there is no likelihood of types in channels C or slots 0 dropping through slots 1), and the test-plates c" of channel 0 have guard-pieces c on their outer ends, which prevent the types in channels B or slots 19 dropping therethrough. Therefore with this construetion the types in the two fonts may be nicked alike.
h h designate curved guide-pieces in the lower ends and at the outer sides of channels 0, adapted to insure the proper register of the types therein with the test-plates of said channels. These guides may be attached to a ring II, if desired. This is but one way of con structing the guide-pieces to bring the types into register with the paper test-plates.
lVhile I have illustrated the distributor with but two series of channels, any desired number of series might be used; but more than two will seldom be necessary or advisable.
The advantages of this invention will be readily appreciated, and as it will be easy to vary the relative arrangement of the various series of type-channels and test-slots I do not confine myself to the particular form and arrangement herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is-
1. In a type distributing machine the combination of a plurality of series of type holding channels; each series adapted to receive type of a particular font; and a series of test plates for each series of channels; with means whereby the test plates in each series are successively registered with the corresponding channels, so that distribution of the types of different fonts takes place simultaneously, substantially as described.
2. In a type distributing machine the 001m bination of a plurality of series of type channels for different sizes or styles of type; a distributed-type receiver for each channel; and the test plates intermediate the channels and receivers; substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a type distributingmachine the coinbination of a cylinder having distinct series of type channels in its periphery, each series adapted to receive a certain size or style of type; a series of distributed-type receivers below the cylinder, and a distinct series of testplates intermediate the channels and receivers, whereby more than one size or character of type can be distributed simultaneously at one operation of the machine, substantially as specified.

In a type distributing machine the com bination of a type holder having a number of typeholdin g channels, the alternate channels being adapted to contain types of different fonts; with a corresponding number of test plates, the alternate test plates being adapted to pass types of different fonts; and means whereby the relative channels and test plates are successively caused toregister, for the purpose and substantially as described.
5. In a type distributing machine a type holding cylinder having a plurality of con centric series of type holding channels, the several series being at different distances from the axis of the cylinder; with test plates for each series of channels, substantially as and for the purpose described.
6. In a type distributing machine a type cylinder with various Width channels, for the reception of more than one sized bodies of types, said different sized channels being arranged collectively on different circles, Whereby more than one sized body of type may be automatically distributed at one and the same operation in eombin ation with the test-plates and type holders, substantially as and for the purpose described.
7 In a type distributing machine a type holding cylinder having a plurality of con.-
centric series of type holding channels, the
respective series being atdiiferent distances from the axis of the cylinder; with a disk having series of slots corresponding to and adapted to register with the series of slots in the cylinder; and the test plates attached to said disk, one at each slot, for the purpose and substantially as described.
8. In a type distributing machine a type holding cylinder having a plurality of con centric series of type holding channels, the several series being at different distances from the axis of the cylinder with test plates for each series of channels, the test plates of the inner channels having guard portions to prevent the types in outer channels falling therethrough, substantially as described.
9. In a type distributing machine the com bination of a series of type channe1s, a series of test plates beneath the channels and adapted to register therewith, and the short curved guide pieces at the lower ends of the channels adapted to insure register of the lowermost types in the channels with the test plates, substantially as described. y 10. In a type distributing machine the com bination of a stationary type-holder having a series of type channels, and a series of test plates moving successively beneath the chan- I nels; with guide pieces secured at the lower ends of the channels and adapted to cause the lowermost types as they descend in the channels to register with the test=plates, substantially as and for the purpose described.
11. In a type distributing machine the combination of a type holding cylinder having two concentric series of type holding (3113.11 nels, the respective series being at different distances from the axis of the cylinder, and one series of slots deeper than the others; with test plates for, each series of channels, and guide pieces in the lower ends of the wider channels adapted to insure register of the type with the test=plate's, substantially as described.
