HAR-NESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,104, dated November 19, 1895.
Application led August 3l, 1895.
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, WILLIAM F. HASPEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph,in the county of Buchanan'and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication. p
This invention relates to a new and improved attachment for harness; and it has for its object the provisionof simple and efficient means whereby the usual breast-collar and breeching-straps of the ordinary harness may be dispensed with.
In carrying out my invention I employthe usual harness-saddle and bearing-straps secured thereto, the latter supporting the shafttugs. To the saddle is also connected a safetystrap which runs parallel with the bearingstraps and is also connected at its ends to the shaft-tugs. The traces are firmly connected to the safety-strap and are provided with forwardly-extended portions, to the ends of which are connected suitable sockets for the reception of the ends of the shafts of any suitable vehicle.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed Out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line fc 9o, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the saddle, a the bearing-straps secured thereto,` and a the shaft-tugs secured to said bearingstraps by suitable buckles a2. The safetystrap B is passed over the saddle and is provided with elongated slots or openings b for the reception of the line-terrets o', secured to the saddle, said terrets being designed to hold said safetystrap in its proper position and prevent slipping or shifting thereof. The

- outer ends b2 of the safety-strap are also connected to buckles a2 of the shaft-tugs a.
O O represent the traces, which are secured by any suitable means, at points intermediate of their forward ends, to enlarged portions b3 of the safety-strap B, the forward portions Cl of said traces being secured by buckles d to sockets D, which are designed to be placed over the ends of the shafts of a buggy or other similar vehicle. Loops or guides d2 are provided for the bearing-straps on the under side of the portion b3 of the safety-strap.
The operation and advantages of my improved harness-attachment are apparant. It will be seen that the forward extension of the traces and the sockets secured thereto serve the purpose of the usual breeching-straps, and that by connecting the traces direct to the safety-strap the breast-collar may be dispensed with.
I claim as my invention- 1. The herein described improved harness attachment, comprising a saddle, bearing straps connected thereto and carrying the shaft tugs, a safetylstrap also connected to said saddle and said tugs, and traces each formed 0f one continuous strap connected at a point intermediate of its ends to said safetystrap, the forwardly extended portions of said traces being designed to be connected to the forward ends of the shafts of a vehicle, substantially as set forth.
2. The herein-described improved harness attachment, comprising a saddle, bearing straps connected thereto and carrying the shaft tugs, a safety strap also connected to said saddle and said tugs and having enlarged portions, traces each formed of one continuous strap connected to the enlarged portions of said safety strap, and sockets secured to the-ends of the forwardly extended portions of said traces and adapted to fit over the ends of the shafts of a vehicle, substantially as set forth.
3. The herein-described improved harness attachment, comprising a saddle, a safety strap removably secured thereto having enlarged portions provided with loops on their under sides, bearing straps secured to said saddle and passed through said loops, shaft tugs Connected to said safety and bearing straps, tra-ees formed each of one continuous strap secured at :t point intermediate of its ends to the enlarged portions of said safety strap, and sockets removably secured to the ends of the forwardly extended portions of said traces and adapted to iit over the ends of the shafts of avehiele, substantially as set forth. lo
In testimony whereof I :Lfx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
