CHECKRElN-SWIVEL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,489, dated November 12, 1895.

Be it known that I, J ULIUs CARWIN'CLAU- sEN, of Hensall, in the province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Checkrein Swivel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in swivels; and it has for its object to provide a swivel for the checkrein of a harness, adapted for attachment to the bridle, the checkrein being passed through the swivel; and a further object of the invention is to construct the swivel in an exceedingly simple, durable, and economic manner and to provide for its being conveniently and expeditiously attached to the bridle or other strap of a harness, and which when applied will be free to turn in any desired direction and will be effectually prevented from leaving the strap.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming'a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a bridle, the strap being partially in section, and a side View of the swivel applied to the strap; and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the strap and an edge view of the swivel, a portion of the swivel being in section.

The strap A, which may represent the side head-piece of a'bridle, is provided with any desired number of apertures 10, and said apertures maybe, and preferably are, reinforced or protected from wear by means of eye lets 11.

The body B of the swivel is of the ordinary construction and is provided with a tubular neck 12, interiorly threaded to receive a shank curved portion of the shank being entered into any one of the aforesaid apertures. The curved end of the shank terminates in a head 14:, pereferably a T-head, as illustrated, and

' the said T-head is of such size as to effectually prevent the shank of the swivel being separated from the strap so long as the said shank is connected, with the body of the swivel.

In making the application of the swivel to the strap its shank is unscrewed from the neck of the body and the threaded end of shank is passed through one of the apertures in the strap and is then screwed into the neck of the swivel.

It will be observed that under the above construction when a swivel has been attached to a strap it may be used in the same manner as a swivel of any other construction and at the same time there will be not the slightest danger of the strap separating from the swivel, especially so since the eyelets 11 prevent the apertures 10 from becoming unduly enlarged.

WVhen the swivel is placed upon the bridle, as shown in the drawings, it will be pendent therefrom and its side edge will be presented to the strap, whereby the checkrein may be readily passed through the body of the swivel.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a check rein swivel, consisting of the body B provided with the tubular neck 12 interiorly screw threaded, and the shank 13 having one end screw threaded and entering the tubular neck of the body, and its other end bent approximately at right angles and terminating in a head 14, whereby the swivel can be readily and quickly attached to a strap, and when attached, is free to turn in the said strap, as set forth.
