CARD-TABLE.
srEcrFIeATIoN'ferming leert ef Lettere Patent No. 547,619, dated october e, 1895. y
Application filed January 2 3, 1 895 -oate whist, its object being to provide the table with a number of movable boxes or drawers, in which the various hands may be separately placed as the game proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of acard-table constructed in acoordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, ou an enlarged scale, on the line 2 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of one of the cardholding boxes.
The table shown in Fig. l comprises a top A, supportedin any suitable manner and provided near each of its four edges with one or more verticallyarranged guideways c, formed, preferably, of sheet metal or thin wood, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2. To each guideway a is adapted a vertically-movable card-receiving box B. The box B comprises a top piece b, somewhat larger than the box proper and adapted to tit within a countersunk recess in the top of the table, the top b being perfectly smooth, so that when the box is in position this top piece will be flush with the upper surface of the table and will form no obstruction to the playing of the cards. From the top depend side and end pieces b b2, to which is secured a bottom piece b3, or the sides and bottom of the box may be formed from a single piece of sheet metal, if desired. One side of the box is open for the insertion and removal of the cards, and in order to prevent them from falling from the box a vertical flange c is provided at the lower portion of the open side. I preferably provide within the box an inclined'partition d, so arranged as to throw the cards outwardly and press them against the side of the guideways a when the box is in position, so that as the box is withdrawn from the guideways the cards Serial No. 536,272. (No model.)
will naturally fall from the open side of the box in convenient position to be grasped by the player, the cards being prevented from falling entirely from the box by the flange c. This inclined partition d may be rigidly or loosely adjusted in position in said box, and it may, if desired, have a springprovided at its rear for forcing the partitionjand cards outwardly.
The number of boxes for each player may be increased or decreased to any desired extent, eight being shown in the present instance as the number most convenient for ordinary use, and as the game progresses the thirteen cards dealt from the first pack to each of the four players are, after being played, placed, respectively, in thel Iirst box of each series, and the second series of hands placed in the No. 2 boxes, and so on until one side of the game is finished, the boxes being numbered consecutively, if desired.
In removing the boxes from the various guideways the ngers must be placed beneath the box and ther latter forced upwardly and removed by the other hand, and as it is desirable to have the top of the table perfectly smooth and level it is necessary that this proa vision be made for removing the boxes by force exerted upon the bottom of the boxes, as will be readily understood.
As shown in Fig. l, the four corners of the table may be provided with dials L, having hands Z for the purpose of counting the number of points made as the game progresses.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters PatentJ 1s== l. The combination of the card table, provided with a series of partitions forming a number of independent vertically arranged guideways extending through the table top, a series of independent, vertically movable card receiving boxes adapted one to each of said guideways, the lower portion of each of such guideways being open so that the bottom of the boxes may be separately engaged and ,forced upwardly from their positions within the guideways, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the table having a series of vertically arranged open bottomed guideways, a series of card-receiving boxes adapted to such guideways, said card-receiv- ICO ing boxes having closed top and bottom portions and an open sido for the reception and removal of the cards, substantially as speoi fied.
The combination of the table having on its top surface near eaoh edge of the table a Vertical guideway, a. card-receiving box havd ing closed top and bottom portions and an open side for the reception and removal of` al, open at tho top and bottom, a card-receiving box, B, adapted to each' guideway, said box having a closed top, b, fitting in a countersnnk recess inthe table top, a flange, o, at the lower portion of the open sido of the box and an inclined partition, owithin said box,sub stantially as specified.
In Witness whereof I hereunto set my hand this 16th day of January, A. D. 1895.
