SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 547,371, dated October 1, 1895. Application filed March 23, 1895. Serial No. 5421935- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE S. COOMBS, of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa-Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improved sofabed; and the object of the same is to provide a movable rail, which constitutes the front longitudinal side of the sofa, so that when the latter is opened out to form a bed the rail is moved so as not to obstruct the mattress or bed-bottom.

The invention consists in the novel features of construction, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the article of furniture when used asa sofa. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical cross-sectional views showing the same partially and completely opened, respectively, to form a bed. Fig. 4 is an end view, partly in section, of a sofa, illustrating a slightly-different manner of holding the rail in place. Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the position of the rail illustrated in Fig. 4 when the sofa is opened for the bed.

The sofa-bed consists of the usual sections A B, the former being supported by legs 0, and the latter being hinged to section A at one of its longitudinal edges, as shown. The top surface of section B is finished or padded to form a sofa, while when the sections are opened out a broad bed-surface is provided.

In order to give the article of furniture a finished appearance when folded to form a sofa, a vertically-movable rail D is provided, which is provided with trunnions E on its ends, the said trunnions being near the lower edge of the rail and adapted to move in vertical slots F, formed in legs 0 of section A. These slots are closed at their upper and lower ends for the purpose presently to be stated.

The topsurface of section B is connected by the cross-covering G to the outer side of rail D, the same being secured to said rail beneath the strip of molding H for the purpose of completing the finish of the sofa. Thus when the article is folded upon the sofa illustrated in Fig. 1 the rail will be in an upright or vertical position with the trunnions raised in the legslots, while when the section B is raised in order to open the bed the rail will pletely removed and entirely out of the way when the article is to be used as a bed.

In Figs. 4 and 5 the trunnions I on the rail J are arranged near the upper edge of the latter, so that the rail will have simply a vertical movement, and will not be turned outward, as in the construction and arrangement first described.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the sections of a sofabed hinged at one edge, the supports for the lowersection being slotted vertically, the rail, the trunnions projecting from its ends into said slots, and the cloth covering connected to the folding section and to the rail, for the purpose substantially as herein shown. and described.

2. The combination of the sections of a folding sofa-bed hinged at one edge, the supports for the lower section being slotted vertically, the rail, the trunnions positioned near the lower longitudinal edge of the rail and projecting into said slots, the cloth covering secured at one edge to the upper side of the top section, and upon its opposite edge to the rail, whereby when the upper section is turned outward to form the bed the rail will also be turned outward and lowered, substantially as shown and described.
