Description
(No Model.) F W LOWE SKATE SHARPENING DEVICE.
Patented Sept. 24, 1895.
STATES PATENT Erica,
FREDERICK W. LOWE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SKATE-SHARPENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,929, dated September 24, 1895.
Application filed January 3, 1895. Serial No. 533,724. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. LOWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skate- Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in skate-sharpeners; and it has for its object, mainly, to provide for the ready adjustment or manipulation of the jaws between which is received the skate-iron or runner to accommodate them to the width or thickness of said runner or skate-iron, and further to facilitate the presentation of the required surface of the file 0r sharpener t0 the skate-iron or runner, according as it may be desired, to provide it-with a fiat-sharpened or concavesharpened surface; and to these ends the invention consists of the detailed construction and combination of the parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved skatesharpener. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a central transverse section, and Fig. at is a central longitudinal section of the same.
In carrying out my invention I employ a holder or frame D, provided with extensions or handles d cl for the ready manipulation of the sharpener. In the transversely-extending openings d of the frame or holder A are arranged ordinary vise-like jaws (1 between which is designed to be received the skate-iron or runner to serve as guides for preventing the lateral displacement of the sharpener as it is passed rapidly back and forth in sharpening the skate-iron or runner. These jaws are moved or adapted to be relatively adjusted, according to the space it is required to be left between them, to receive or accommodate the skate-iron or runner to be sharpened by means of a right-hand and left-hand threaded screw d with its screwthreaded portions working in said jaws, respectively, and its unthreaded portion bearing in a middle bar or piece (1 of the frame or holder D. Said screw has a disk or head d, arranged in an opening in one of the handles d, for its convenient manipulation by the forcible passing of the thumb or finger over the same, as well understood.
In the longitudinally-extending opening e of the frame or holder D, and at one end of the latter, is arranged a movable jaw (1 and opposed to this jaw, at the other end of said holder or frame, is a fixed or stationary jaw (Z these jaws being provided with conical bearing-points e e. Between these points are pivotally held the file or sharpener proper d said bearing-points entering cavities or sockets in the ends of the file d allowing the latter to be axially turned or revolved in readily presenting for use the required rounded or fiat surfaces with which the file is provided, according as it may be desired to flatsharpen or concave-sharpen the skate-iron or runner.
A screw d having a head 61 outside of the holder D for its convenient operation and bearing in said holder, engages and provides for the movement of the movable jaw OZ in placing the file in position upon the bearingpoints e e of the jaws d d and in loosening the file to permit its axial movement or rotation for the purpose aforesaid.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The skate-sharpener comprising the holder or frame, the movable parallel jaws arranged in said holder or frame, the righthand and left-hand threaded screw bearing in said frame or holder and engaging said jaws respectively, and the file or sharpener proper, arranged as set forth substantially as set forth.
2. The skate sharpener comprising the holder or frame, having at one end a fixed jaw, a movable jaw arrangedin an opening in said holder or frame, in the opposite end of said holder, a screw bearingin said frame or holder and engaging said movable jaw, said fixed and movable jaws having conical bearing points, and a file or sharpener, proper, provided with cavities in its ends to receive said conical bearing points, axially pivoting said file or sharpener, proper, substantially as described.
'In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK IV. LOWE.
