UNITE TA-TES TENT rntcat CHARLES C. SOHILD, O'F IONIA, MICHIGAN.
DEVICE FOR PREVENTION OF FEATHER-PULLING IN FQWLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 54.6,905, dated September 24, 18 95.
Application filed May 16 1 89 5.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES 0. Serum), a citizen of the United States, residing at Ionia, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for the Prevention of Feather-Pulling in Fowls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for the prevention of feather-pulling in fowls; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and definitely pointed out in the claim.
One object of my invention is to providea device for the prevention of feather-pulling in fowls which shall be simple in its construction, strong and durable, and at the same time will permit of its easy adjustment.
Another object of my invention is to construct a device for the prevention of featherpulling in fowls which cannot be removed by the fowls themselves by means of claws or in any manner whatever, and yet in no wise be uncomfortable or interfere in the act of feeding and drinking.
I accomplish these objects by means of the mechanism herein described, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 an end view, of same. Fig. 4 is aview showing the manner in which it is attached to the mandibles or bill of a fowl. V
In the drawings, A represents my device constructed of a single piece of spring-wire, the outer or free ends of which are a short distance apart, as at a a. From these points a a the wire is bent around, outward, and inward to form the curved hooks b b. The inner extremities of said hooks b b nearly touch Serial No. 549,481. (No model) each other, as at c. From 0 the wire is bent at right angles thereto, forming slight downward and outward curved portions 0 0, thus widening the space between the wire, as at d, where it is bent upward at a right angle with the curved portions 0' c, which forms the nearly-semicircular portion a.
My improved device is secured to the mandibles or bill of a fowl in the following manner: The hooks I) Z) are inserted into the nostrils of the upper mandible and are supported at the opposite end by the nearly-semicircular portion 6. That portion of the device formed by the slight downward and outward curves 0' 0' extends partly within between the upper and lower mandible, thus serving to keep them slightly apart, which prevents the fowl from grasping a feather to pull it, yet on account of the elasticity or spring tension of the wire of which it is composed does not interfere with the free action of eating and drinking. It is intended only to use my improved device on fowls until the habit of feather-pulling has been broken or the vice forgotten.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A device for the prevention of feather pulling in fowls, consisting of a single piece of spring wire, the outer or free ends of which are bent around, outward and inward to form the curved hooks 19,17, the downward and outward curved portions 0, c, and the nearly semi-circular portion 6, bent at right angles to the portions 0', c, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
