OF JERSEY SHORE, PENNSYLVANIA, AND NEIVTON A. STRAIT, OF XVASH- INGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
BEATER FOR CARPETS OR LIKE ARTlCLES.
SPECIFICATZON forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,870, dated September 24;, 1895.
Application filed June 24, 1895. Serial No. 553,835. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, GEORGE BURRIs YOUN- KIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at W'illiamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beaters for Carpets or Like Articles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will I0 enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form in which I have contemplated embodying my invention, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.
Referring to the said drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a beater embodying my inven tion, a portion of the loop being broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the handle, showing the means for securing the other parts thereto. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a portion of the flat wire braid forming the loop. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the handle on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
The object of my invention is to provide in 0 a carpet-beater consisting of a handle and a loop of flexible material, a bearing-head loosely engaging the flexible material between the handle and the outer extremity of the loop, an elastic portion being provided between the 5 said bearing-head and the handle.
In the drawings, A represents the handle, which is preferably formed of .wood, and is provided, preferably, with a transverse opening a and longitudinal grooves a a on op- 0 posite edges extending from the opening a to the end of the handle.
B represents the loop, which is preferably formed of fiat braided wire, as shown, and has its ends secured to the handle, the broad faces 5 of the braid engaging the inner faces of the grooves a a and the ends of the braid being bent inward and forced into the aperture a, as shown, to better secure the loop. The ends of the loop are secured to the handle by staples C C, engaging the wire braid and hold- 0 ing it in the grooves a a.
D represents the outer-bearing-head,which is formed, preferably, of wire in one piece. In this instance I have shown it as formed with two'eyes d d, loosely engaging portions of the braided wire loop B between the handle and the end of the loop B, said eyes being connected by a wire d and said loops being supported by elastic portions d d 'of the wire, which extend toward the handle, lie within the grooves a a thereof, and are held in position by the staples O C. It will be seen that by using the outer bearing-head D the bend of the wires of the loop 13 when in use is dis- I tributed, as part of the bend will occur adjacent to the staples C C and a part of the bend will occur adjacent to the outer bearinghead, thus forcing the wire to bend gradually and uniformly from the staples C to a point beyond the outer bearing-head D. This effect is further aided and secured by the fact that the bearing-head is supported by the elasticity of the wires d (1 connecting it and the handle. This construction secures a very efficient and exceedingly-durable beater for car- 7 5 pets, car-seats, and other articles, as will be readily understood.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A beater for carpets and like articles ineluding among its members a handle, a loop of flexible material rigidly secured to said handle, an outer bearing head separate from the handle loosely engaging portions of said loop between the handle and the outer end 8 of said loop and an elastic support for said bearing head between it and the handle, substantially as described.
2. A beater for carpets and like articles including among its members, a handle, a loop of elastic material having its ends engaging said handle, an outer bearing head formed of wire, having eyes for loosely engaging portions of the loop between the handle and the end of the loop, wire supports for said eyes 5 engaging the handle adjacent to the ends of the loop and securing devices for securing said wire supports and the ends of the loop to the handle, substantially as described.
3. A heater for carpets and like articles including among its members, a handle, having attaching grooves on opposite sides, a loop of elastic material having its ends engaging said grooves, an outer bearing head formed of wire having eyes for loosely engaging portions of the loop between the handle and the end of the loop, wire supports for said eyes engaging said grooves, and supporting devices for engaging said supports and the ends of said loop to secure them join tly in said grooves, substantially as described.
