Description

(No Model.)
S. O. GARY.
. PAIL HOOK. No. 546,840. Patented Sept, 24,1895.
WITNESSES: I I [NI/ENTUI? gy M Ma W M W a??? l ATTORNEY U ITE TATE'S SPENCER C. CARY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE CARY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW YORK.
PAIL-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,840, dated September 24, 1895.
Application filed May '7, 1895. Serial No. 548,391- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SPENCER O. CARY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pail-Hooks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of the same, in which- Figure 1 represents one form of a blank from which I construct my device, and Fig. 2 represents one form of that device as completed.
A pail-hook, (as the article largely used to hold on the covers of wooden shippingpails and for kindred matters is called,) to be acceptable, must be cheap, easily bent between the ends over the angle of a package and conforming readily to the shape of the package, the prongs must hold well and yet must not split the wood, and to meet all these requirements I have devised the one here represented. I have so designed the form that it may be struck from sheet metal at a single blow. I have left it wide enough at the ends to furnish sufficient metal to form prongs that are firm and not easily bent in driving. I have so arranged these prongs that two of them bind the fibers of wood, which are at the respective sides of the third when it has been driven, and so hold it tightly in place, and I have out out the intermediate parts, so that it may be readily bent between the ends to pass over the corner or angle of the package to which it is to be applied and conform to its shape. If it were made solid and narrow enough to accomplish such purpose, its width would not furnish sufficient metal at the ends to form the prongs and yet leave any for strength in holding them to the body of the hook. The prongs I prefer to form as shown, two at each end, with a space between wider than the third prong, which I prefer to strike out from the metal beyond the part lying between the bases of the first two and the third one, as it thus leaves a solid and firm base for a support to those prongs thus struck up. This third prong being preferably narrower than the space between the two end prongs, there are some fibers of the wood on its respective sides, but within the inner lines of the two end prongs, that are not entirely severed by this third prong, and these fibers the end prongs compress tightly together and thus cause the third prong to be held more firmly in place than would be the case were the prongs so placed and proportioned that the fibers were all severed for a continuous space substantially equal to the united width of the three prongs.
The slot along the central portion of the main body may be a single one; but I prefer to have it in two or more (here three) divisions, with bridges between, as that gives lightness, the required flexibility, and yet provides a stronger article than would be the case were the slot a single one from the base of one interior prong entirely across to the base of the other interior prong. The slot should preferably be of considerable length, as it is not always desired to bend the device exactly at the central cross-line, and it is preferable that it shall bend as readily at a point either side of the central line as it will on that line.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A new article of manufacture consisting of a pail hook having one or more prongs at or near the ends and a slot between the side edges of some portion of that part between the ends, substantially as set forth.
2. A. new article of manufacture consisting of a pail hook having one or more prongs at or near the ends and two or more slots in the portion intermediate the ends, separated by one or more bridges of metal which connect the side portions of the hook substantially as set forth.
3. A new article of manufacture consisting of a pail hook having three or more prongs at each end or near each end, one of said prongs being located nearer the center than two others at the same end, and on a different longitudinal line and its width being less than the space between said other prongs, all substantially as set forth.
4. A new article of manufacture consisting ence of two witnesses, this 4th day of May, of a pail hook having prongs at each corner 1805. within the side lines of the body of the hook,
and a slot intermediate the ends, substan- SPENCER GARY 5 tially as set forth. Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as EMMA O. DEGHUEE,
my invention I have signed myname, in pres- A. G. W. VERMILYA.
