Myinvention relates to an improvement in folding paper boxes, the object being to produce at a low cost for manufacture a simple and durable box constructed with particular reference to being shipped in a collapsed form and folded and completed by the consumer.
WVith these ends in View my invention consists in a box having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Before proceeding to the detailed description of my improvement I will say that it is equally applicable for making box-bodies and box-covers, and that a box-body constructed in accordance with myinvention may be used with a box-cover of ordinary or different formation, and vice versa.
For the purposes of description, I have chosen to describe the construction of the body of a box about half as long again as it is wide, although, of course, the proportions of the boxes constructed in accordance with my invention may be'varied as desired. The said box-body is made in two parts, which for convenience of description I shall term a longitudinal and a transverse part. The transverse part comprises a bottom portion A and corresponding side portions'A A, which are separated from the bottom portion, as it were, .by creases designated by the broken lines" a and determining the lines on which the side portions shall be folded with respect to the body portion. The said bottom portion is furnished at its ends with corresponding narrow 'flaps A A ,virtually separated from each other by creases represented by the broken lines Ct to, while the side portions A A are also provided at each end with flaps A A which are virtually separated from the said side portions by creases represented by the broken lines a a Four rectangular notches A are formed between the outer ends of the flaps A and the inner ends of the flaps A to permit the folding of the part under description, as shown in Fig. 4, which shows that the end walls pf the notches abut against each other to form what maybe termed miter-joints a Having described the transverse part of the box -body, l willnow proceed to the description of the'lo'ngitudinal part thereof, this part being formed of considerably lighter stock than the transverse part and comprising a bottom portion B, end portions 13 B, and large end flaps B B ,the bottom portions and end portions being virtually separated by creases indicated by the broken lines o b, and the end portions and the end flaps being demarked by creases represented by thebroken lines I) b.
The two parts having been formed as described, the bottom portion B of the longitudinal part is applied to the outer or under face of the bottom portion A of the transverse part and firmly secured thereto either by paste,glue, cement, or other adhesive material, or, by mechanical means, such as some fastening device, the bottom portions A and B corresponding in size to each other. The two parts when thus secured together lie out fiat and present the appearance shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. My design is that the boxbodies shall be packed and shipped in the condition shown by Fig. 3, when one may be piled on the other and a'great number of boxbodies packed in very small space. To complete the box-body for use, the side portions A A of the transverse part are lifted or folded so as to stand at a right angle to the bottom portionA thereof, after which the flaps A are folded to form right angles with the said bottom portion A and the flaps A folded to form right angles with the side portions A. The transverse part of the box-body will then appear at both ends as it does at the left-hand end of the box-body shown in Fig. I of the drawings. The end portions 13' of the longitudinal part of the box are then folded up against the outer faces of the narrow flaps A and A of the transverse part, after which the large end flaps B are folded over upon the inner faces of the said flaps of the transverse part, as shown at the right in Fig. 4, whereby the box-body is completed, as shown in Fig. 5, where it is represented as being furnished with a cover D, which may or may not be formed on the same principle.
As shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4 of the drawings, I have provided the edges of the longitudinal part with bands 0, of adhesive material, which are moistened at the time of folding the box and which secure the end portions 13 of the longitudinal part to the outer faces of the flaps of the transverse part and also secure the large end flaps B of the iongitudinal part to the inner faces of the flaps of the said transverse part. This is an effective and convenient way of completing the box-body; but I do not limit myself to the use of paste, glue, or other adhesive material, for I may, if desired, secure the members together by the use of some fastening device such, for instance, as the sheet-metal fastening deviceE shown in Fig. 0the said device being shown as passing through one of the flaps A and through the edges of one of the inner portions B and the large end flap B formed integral therewith. I would particularly call attention to the fact that my improved box has a double bottom and also double ends, as well as amply reinforced corners, which are formed by the combination of the narrow flaps of the transverse part and the end portions and large end flaps of the longitudinal part.
My improved box is very easily completed, and when done is stiff, strong, and durable. Moreover, by forming it in two parts, as shown and described, I avoid waste of material, and by using two weights of stock I am enabled to reinforce the box just where reinforcement is most required.
In carrying out my invention I may make boxes of all sizes and of a great variety of paper stock. I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
I am aware that paper-box bodies or covers have been formed from two or more pieces, and therefore do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, such as my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein described box-body or cover consisting of two independently formed parts, one part forming the inner bottom portion and side walls, each of which is extended to form narrow retaining flanges, the other part forming the outer bottom portion and doubled ends between the folds of which the flaps of the sides extend, said parts being firmly united substantially as described.
