ALVA sILAs emutt'or sr. MARYS, WEST VIRGINIA.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,735, dated September 24, 1895.
Application filedAugust 20, 1895. Serial No. 559,933. (No modelJ.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALvA SILAs GRIMM, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Marys, in the county of Pleasants and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in GarmentSupporters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has relation to devices for supporting garments, and is designed as an improvement upon my former patent, dated April 30, 1895, No. 588,488; and theinvention consists in certain details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a garment-supporter constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a detail perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of the adjustable bar and its connections, also the plate to which it is adj ustably connected; Fig. 3, a detail sectional View showing the manner of securing the wire arms to the jointed bracket; Fig. 4, a detail sectional view showing the means employed for holding the bar in its adjusted position.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the belt adapted to be secured around the pelvis and provided with any suitable fastenings at its meeting ends for securing them together in position upon the wearer. This belt may be constructed of any suitable material and made in any desirable manner and of any width and length and may have upon its inner side any number of pads or cushions, which are located thereon as found best adapted to the purpose.
As above described, the belt proper may be changed or modified in the various details of construction without departing from the principle of my invention, the belt shown being one of many forms'to which the invention is applicable.
Suitable base-plates B are secured to the outer side of the belt A in a position to be at the side of the body of the wearer, and are two in number and may be of any suitable length and width and of any desirable thickness. These plates are provided upon their outer side with a spring-latch O to engage with the holes a. in an adjustable bar D, said bar extending down through a guide 1), secured to the plate near the lower end thereof. Near the upper end of the plate is a headed pin 0 to engage with the holes 01 e, of different sizes or diameters, which holes join each other, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. When the shank of the headed pin 0 engages with the hole e, the bar D will be held in engagement with the pin; but when it is desired to change the position of the bar or adjust it the springlatch O is raised out of the hole a, which will allow the bar tobe slightly moved to bring the large hole 61 over the head of the pin 0, thus allowing the bar to be disengaged therefrom and moved up or down to engage the pin with the hole above or below, as the case may be, the spring-latch securely holding the bar in its adjusted position. Any suitable springlatch and means for holding the bar to the base-plate may be employed in place of the means shown. A suitable bracket E is hinged to the upper end of the bar D, so that it will move in a direction outwardly upon its joint connection, thus giving the bracket an outward motion beyond the plane of the baseplate B, but will not have an inward motion beyond the plane of the bar to which it is connected. The brackets E may be of any suitable construction and are provided with elongated loops f, which extend at right angles to the length of the bars D, or in a horizontal di rection, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The elongation of the loops f is to enable the button-loops, to which they are connected, to have a lateral sliding movement or freedom of movement in a direction to or from the bar, these button-loops being shown at g and being secured to the loops f in any manner that will admit of their having a sliding movement.
The arms F are preferably formed of spring wire and are secured to the brackets Ein any suitable and well-known manner, or as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Each pair of arms may be formed of one single piece of wire, or separate pieces may be used, as found most desirable, or in constructing each arm one or more strands of wire may be employed, and the arms may be covered with suitable material of any form that would best serve the purpose intended and at the same time be comfortable to the wearer. The ends of the arms F may have suitable eyes i, to which are suitably attached the button-loops h to support the garment at both front and rear. The brackets E are so located with relation to the belt that they will be at the sides of the body over the iliac bones. The arms F may be constructed at their ends in any suitable manner that will enable the button-loops to be conveniently attached thereto, the several button-loops being preferably formed of an elastic material to more readily connect with the buttons, the adjustability of the bars D adapting the arms F to the garment.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A garment supporter, consisting of a suitable belt, vertically adjustable bars connected thereto, hinged or jointed brackets upon the upper ends of the arm having laterally ex tended and elongated loops, and suitable arms attached to the bracket, said elongated loops and arms adapted for the attachment thereto of suitable elastic button-loops, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A garment supporter, consisting of asuitable belt, suitable bars adjustably connected thereto, a spring latch device for holding the bars in their adjusted position, jointed brackets upon the upper ends of the bars provided with laterally extended and elongated loops, and spring wire arms connected to the brackets, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ALVA SILAS GRIMM.
