Be it known that I, JOHN MOCONNELL, a citizen of the United States,residi ng at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bowls or Boxes for Household Purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in bowls or boxes for household purposes; and the object of the invention is to provide a bowl or box which is especially adapted for use in the kitchen for conveniently holding salt and other like articles that have to be used frequently during the day; but Ido not mean that the box is limited to kitchen purposes, and it may be used wherever a box of this kind can be made available, and it is constructed in different sizes to suit different uses, whether in the kitchen or elsewhere.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of my invention on a line which crosses the wall-bracket substantially on linewoa'Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a perspective front elevation of the Wall-bracket plate separated from the other parts of the structure; and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the lid or cover, likewise apart from the other members of the box. Fig. 4 is a reduced rear View of the fiat-surfaced portion of the bowl, which rests against the bracket-plate and is engaged thereon, as hereinafter more fully described. A represents the bracket plate, with as many screw-holes 2 as may be required to fasten it firmly to the wall. This bracket is provided with a pair of right-angled engaging lugs or catches 3, which stand out from the face of the bracket about as shown and have sufficient strength to engage and hold the top of the bowl B. This bowl has a flat-surfaced portion on its rear, with notchesor recesses t in its top corresponding to the engaging-lugs 3, and at its bottom it has a proj ecting lip or portion 5, which rests upon the shoulder 6 at the bottom of the bracket A. A swinging counterweighted catch or latch O is pivoted upon the lower extremity of the bracket A'in position to engage over the lip or projection when the bowl is in position and to hold it there, as seen in Fig. 1.

D is the lid or cover of the bowl or box B. For the purpose of lightness thislid is made, preferably, of sheet metal stamped up about its edges to make a close-fittin g cover for the bowl, and has a hinge portion E riveted upon its rear edge and made a permanent part thereof. The cover thus constructed has lateral hinge projections 7' at its rear and lugs 8 between and in line with said projections and at right angles thereto. It will thus be seen that all the parts A, B, and D are madein separate pieces and are separable, but are united by engaging one with the other, as described. Thus to put the parts together for use I first fix the bracket upon the wall where it is to remain permanently, and then secure the cover D thereon by turning it into about the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, so as to bring the projections 7 under the engaging hooks or catches 9 on the bracket. This done and the cover being lowered to a horizontal position the lugs 8 rest upon the catches 3 of the bowl and prevent disengagement from the hooks 9. The cover may thus be raised and-lowered at will and still be securely held upon the bracket regardless of the bowl. This is desirable and useful for the reason that it may become necessary to frequently remove the bowl for the purpose I of washing or possibly for filling or for other reasons, and this construction enables the bowl to be removed and replaced without removing the cover from the bracket. Now, having the cover putin place on the bracket, the bowl is next put into position by engaging the catches 3 over the recesses or notches 4 and bringing the projection 5 to rest upon the shoulder 6. To do this, the catch 0 must first be swung into the position seen in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and then as soon as the bowl is placed in position the said catch will of its own accord swing into locking engagement and remain that way. Of course I might use a common turn-button or its equivalent in lieu of this counterweighted catch. If iron be used to make the several parts, they may be japanned to prevent rusting; but obviously the bowl, which is most liable to be injuriously affected by use, may have porcelain or other like lining which would permanently resist the action of salt or any other substance that might attack iron, and, for that matter, the bowl may be made of wood or any other serviceable material. The bowl is further provided with a fiat bottom portion 12, so that it may be taken out and set upon a table the same as any other bowl.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The bowl having a flat back portion and a projection at the bottom thereof, the flat bracket plate to support the bowl provided with a projection at its bottom serving as a rest for the bowl, and hook shaped catches to engage over the top edge of the bowl and a movable catch for the lower portion of the bowl, substantially as set forth.

2. The bracket plate having a fiat face and provided with separate forwardly projecting lugs and catches at its upper portion on different horizontal planes and a ledge at its bottom, in combination with abowl having a fiat back and confined on said ledge and engaged by said lugs, and a cover engaged by said catches and resting on said lugs, substantially as set forth.

3. The bracket plate A provided with lugs 3 and catches 9- near its top and ledge 6 at its bottom, in combination with the bowl B- secured upon said plate, the cover -D- having projections -8 resting on the lugs -3 and engaged by catches 9-, and a latch to confine the bowl at its bottom on said plate, substantially as set forth.
