SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,531, dated September 1'7, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HAMDEN A. HEOOX, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Centreville, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Dry Closets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to dry closets, and is in some respects an improvement upon the closet which I have described and claimed in my pending application, Serial No. 545,514, filed April 12, 1895.

The presentinvention relates more particularly to the dust-hopper and to the means employed for carrying the dust and the intermixed disinfecting or deodorizing material from such hopper to the receptacle of the closet.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the box or casing of the closet which is designed to be supplied with a current of warm air, as described in the said application, which is furnished by a lamp placed within the box or by means of a pipe from a warm room, such current of air being caused to pass directly under the seat, above the receptacle B, by means of a vertical partition 0, and from thence into a line or pipe D, carrying with it the odors and gases of the closet. E designates the dust-hopper, which consists of a box which is supported upon the casing A behind the seat A, said box having an upper chamber F and a lower chamber F. The walls of said chambers are inclined inwardly or contracted into funnel shape, in order that the material placed therein will readily work itself to the bottom. At the central bottom portion of the upper chamber is placed a grinding or pulverizing device G, which consists of a lower stationary plate 9 Serial no. 550,695. (No model.)

having fine perforations therein, an upper rotary plateor disk g having larger perforations, and stationary cross-bars 9 which prevent the material to be ground or pulverized .from being carried around by the said rotary disk. Said disk is rotated by means of a shaft H and crank H.

The bottom of the lower chamber consists of an inclined plate I, which is hinged or pivoted at its upper rear end, and which is arranged to deliver the material into the receptacle B. The lower portion of this plate is supported by a transverse fluted or flanged roller or shaft K, which is operated by a crank L.

M is the hinged cover for the hopper, and N is a vertical flue in its rear portion through which the foul air passes from the box A to the fine or pipe D.

The dust or like material is first placed in the upper chamber of the hopper together with a suitable disinfectant or antiseptic, and in passing through the pulverizing device described the two are thoroughly incorporated with each other and reduced to the proper degree of fineness. The material then falls upon the plate I and is delivered to the receptacle B, as may be required, by the operation of the crank L.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a dry closet, the combination with a box or casing having a seat and adapted to contain a receptacle, of a hopper supported thereon, said hopper having an upper and a lower chamber or compartment, the walls of which are inclined inwardly, or contracted, a grinding or pulverizing device in the bottom of the upper chamber or compartment, apivoted, inclined plate forming the bottom ofthe lower chamber or compartment, said plate being arranged to deliver the material from the hopper into the receptacle, and means for agitating said plate, substantially as specified.

2. In a dry closet, the combination with the box or casing having a seat and adapted to contain a receptacle, and means for supplying a current of warm air through said box or casing, of a hopper having upper and lower compartments, a grinding and pulverizing device in the bottom of the upper compartment, In testimony whereof I affix my signature an inclined discharging plate forming the in presence of two witnesses. bottom of the lower compartment, and a vertical flue to the rear of said compartments HAMDEN A.
