GEORGE GROS, OF IVATERBURY, GONNECTIOUT.
VAPO RIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,156, dated January s, 1899.
Application fled February 21, 1898.- Serial No. 671,034. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE GROS, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Odorators; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specilication, and represent, in
Figure l, a perspective view of the invention as applied to an independent case; Fig. 2, a top view of the same with the cover removed; Fig. 3, a sectional view on the line a b of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a broken horizontal section through the air-supply tube and scentbox; Fig. 5, a perspective view of the preferred form of scent-containing box; Fig. 6, a perspective View of the cover therefor; Fig. 7, a top view of the modified form of box with the cover removed.
This invention relates to an improvement in odorators, and particularly to that class in which a fly or fan wheel is employed in connection with a receptacle for containing perfume or scents, which are thereby atomized and forced into the atmosphere.
The object of this invention is to provide simple mechanism for diffusing the odor which may be assembled in a case for the particular purpose or applied to cabinets or other articles of furniture; and the invention consists in a fan-wheel and motor for driving it, a perfume-box opening beneath said wheel, and a draft-tube opening into said perfume-box, and in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
Vhen formed independently, the odorator will consist of a case A and cover B therefor, in the center of which is a damper O, which may be opened and closed in the usual manner. In one end of the case between plates D E is mounted a train of gearing which rapidly drives a vertical shaft F, on which is mounted a fan-wheel G, which is inclosed by a circular flange H, the upper edges of which are connected by a transverse bar I, providing a support for the upper end ofthe shaft F. This flange projects beyond the top plate D, and to the under edges of the projecting portion is secured a semicircular disk J, in which is a circular opening K. In the opposite end of the case and preferably adapted t0 be entered or Withdrawn through the end of the case is a perfume receptacle, which will preferably consist of a square box L, subdivided into compartments M M, each of which projects beyond the center of one side, which is formed with openings N. The box L is closed by a cover O, formed with a circular opening P, corresponding in size to the opening K and so arranged as to stand over the end of either of the compartments M in the box and so that when the box is in place the opening P will stand beneath the opening K. From the end A of the case a tube Q enters and extends nearly to the box L. The upper edge of this tube is formed with a clearance-slot Q' for the handle R of a sliding tube R', which is adapted to enter one of the openings N in the box L, and so as to project into one of the compartments M therein and so that air may enter the tube Q and pass into the compartment. Upon the top -plate D is mounted a flat brake-lever d, which projects beneath the ring H and is provided at its outer end with an upturned inclined finger e, which is adapted to bear against the shaft F. To the opposite end of the lever is pivoted an arm f, which projects through the front of the case and so that as the arm is moved in or out it will throw the brake-lever into or out of engagement with the shaft F, so as to hold it against rotation or allow it to revolve under the action of the spring mechanism. Into each compartment M is placed a sponge or other suitable material which may be saturated with the desired perfume or scent. The box is then placed in the case so that the opening in the cover stands beneath the opening K and under the fans G. The sliding tube R is then moved forward, so as to project into the opening N, and the damper C in the cover above the fan is opened and the brake thrown off from the shaft F. The fans being thus allowed to revolve draw the air which is su pplied to the compartments M through the tubes Q and R', and the air thus passing through the sponge or other material becomes impregnated with the scent,
which is thus forced into the atmosphere,
IOG
whereby a room will be readily perfumed, or, if desired, a medicinal compound or disinfectant may be introduced into the compartment and the air thereby medicated or disinfected.
Instead of employing a square box, as described, a circular box may be employed, as shown in Fig. 7, which will be provided with an opening N for the reception of the sliding tube R', and with an internal iiange S, by which the air will be deflected from the inlettube to a circular opening beneath the opening K under the fans, such a construction, however, providing for only one substance to be atomized, while the square box provides for the employment of different substances.
WVhen not in use, the damper C is closed, which prevents the escape of odors from the box.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An odorator comprising a case and a cover having an opening therein, a fan-wheel mounted in the case directly beneath the hole in the cover, a motor for driving said fanwheel, a scent-box located within said case below the fan-wheel and provided with a top having an opening adjacent to said fan-wheel,
and also formed with an opening in one side, and a draft-tube extending through the case 3o and projecting into said scent-box through the opening in the side thereof, substantially as described.
2. An odorator comprising a case and a cover having an opening therein, a fan-Wheel 3 5 mounted in the case beneath said opening, and a motor for driving it, a square scent-box within said case, and having a plurality of separate compartments, an opening in each side of the box into the respective compart- 4o ments, a draft-tube extending through the case and so as to open into either of said compartments accordingly as the box is located,
a cover for said box, and an opening in the cover near one edge thereof, so that it may 45 stand over either of said compartments accordingly as the box is located to present the desired compartment beneath the said fanwheel substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this 5o specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
