  • My invention relates to improvements in devices for binding lumber on wagons. It is well known that the devices heretofore used for this purpose are extremely awkward and diflicult to manage. Ordinarily a chain is linked about the load and a loop twisted therein by means of a pole which is used as a lever and which is then bound to the bolster to hold the chain in place. It is difficult to bind the load sufficiently with such devices as owing to the jar of the wagon the lumber is kept in a constant state of vibration and the boards tend to slip out longitudinally. With these devices two men are usually required to bind the load. The unequal pull of the chain often injures the board, and when not in use the chain and pole are a source of annoyance and are frequently lost.

DEVICE FOR BINDING LUMBER ON WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,518, dated September 17, 1895.

Be it known that I, FREDERICK FOUNTAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Appleton, in the county of Outagamie and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and use ful Device or Machine for Binding Lumber on Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for binding lumber on wagons. It is well known that the devices heretofore used for this purpose are extremely awkward and diflicult to manage. Ordinarily a chain is linked about the load and a loop twisted therein by means of a pole which is used as a lever and which is then bound to the bolster to hold the chain in place. It is difficult to bind the load sufficiently with such devices as owing to the jar of the wagon the lumber is kept in a constant state of vibration and the boards tend to slip out longitudinally. With these devices two men are usually required to bind the load. The unequal pull of the chain often injures the board, and when not in use the chain and pole are a source of annoyance and are frequently lost.
The object of my invention is to provide mechanism for binding lumber which may be conveniently attached to the wagon, and by means of which the chain may be drawn tightly but steadily and equally against all parts of the load.
In the drawings, Figure l is a top view of a wagon, showing my invention as attached to the reach. Fig. 2 is a view of one of the chain-tightening nuts provided with a hook for engaging the chain. Fig. 3 is a side view of the adjustable box by means of which the screw-shaft is supported from the reach of the wagon, showing also the screw-shaft and jou rnal-box. Fig. 4. is a sectional view of the same drawn on the line 00a: of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view of a loaded wagon with my invention in use, drawn on a line immediately in front of the binding-chain.

E is a screw-shaft supported in the bearing D and oppositely threaded at each end, one end being preferably made of sufficient length to project beyond the line of the wagonwheels.
Nuts F and F, turned on the respective ends of the shaft, are provided with the hooks G G, adapted to engage in the links of the chain H. The nuts F and F being turned on the shaft to a position underneath the sides of the load, the chain H is thrown over the load and engaged with the hooks G G, and the shaft is then turned by means of a lever I inserted through the projecting end of the shaft to draw the nuts inwardly on the screwthreads until the chain is sufficiently tightened about the load. If desired, pinsJ J may be inserted in holes through the shaft to limit the outward movement of the nuts when the load is unbound. They are thus always found in position for use.
In Fig. 3 I have shown means for adjusting the casing or shell B to reaches of different size, the shell being provided with the vertical slots L, through which the supportingbolts 0' are passed.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. Adevice for binding lumber on wagons, consisting of the combination with the wagon reach, of the block 0, provided with a journal bearing D, and supported from said reach by a casing or shell B, the screw shaft E, supported in said journal bearing substantially at right angles to the reach, and oppositely threaded at each end, the nuts F and F adapted to be turned on each end of the shaft, respectively, and provided with chain engaging hooks, together with a single chain adapted to be passed over the load and engaged at each end by said hooks, and a lever for turning said shaft, substantially as described.
