ROAD-ROLLER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J nrrnns F. RICHARD- son, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road- Rollers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide simple and highly efficient means for coupling a train of wagons, or other vehicles, to a road roller by which such train may be moved with equal facility in opposite directions.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view with parts in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an arm which I have shown in the form of a casting designed to be detachably secured to the frame of a road roller, and preferably at the steering end thereof, but if desired this arm may be formed integral with the roller frame. I have shown the arm as curved throughout practically its entire length, the curvature being on a greater radius than that of the steering roll over which it is located, so that such arm although extending down over and forward of such roll will not in any way interfere with the shifting of the latter in the steering of the machine. According to the ar rangement shown, the arm is detachably secured to the roller frame, being bolted around the journal bearing of the steering roll yoke, and for this purpose I have shown the arm as provided with a removable section 2 to permit of easy application and removal, said section being held by bolts 3. But, as before stated, if desired the arm may be formed integral with the roller frame.
The arm extends forward and downward and terminates in a jaw clevis 4 or other device to which the tongue of a wagon may be readily coupled. The coupling end of the arm is ordinarily onthe level of a wagon tongue so that coupling may be readily effected. Whether or not the steering roll be composed of a single body or spaced-apart sections the arm does not interfere with the shifting thereof.
The advantages of my invention will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art. It will be seen that I have provided simple and highly efficient means for enabling trains of wheeled vehicles to be moved in opposite directions by means of a road roller.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a road roller having a frame, a steering roll, and a yoke therefor journaled in the roller frame, of an arm detachably secured to said roller frame adjacent to the journal bearing of said yoke, said arm being rigid with respect to the roller frame and extending outwardly and downwardly over the steering roll and terminating at the normal level of a wagon tongue.
2. In combination with a road roller having a steering roll and a yoke therefor having a journal bearing, an arm having a removable section boltcd on said bearing, said arm extending outwardly and downwardly over said roll and rigid with respect to the roller frame, and coupling means at the outer lower end of said arm.
