Description

(No Model.) Q
S. R. MONROE;
ADJUSTABLE HARNESS LOOP. No. 545,455. Patented Sept. 17, 1895.
FIG. 5- 5 11 5 P WITNESSES, INYEN I'CIR,
' firm/Q0 ETEPILIZEIN EL. MUNRUE.
BY ZCMb/i/W /6G#/ATTURNEY UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn,
STEPHEN R. MONROE, OF BRISTOL, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO EDWARD O. MARSH, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE HARNESS LOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 546,455, dated September 1'7, 1895.
Application filed November 6, l 894. Serial No. 528,051. (No model.)
- dison and State of Vermont, have invented certain Improvements in Adjustable'Harn ess- Loops, of which the subjoined description,in connection with the accompanying drawings, constitutes a specification.
' The subject-matter of this patent consists of a small detachable and adjustable springwire loop which is capable of application in various situations around an ordinary har ncss Where the otherwise free and unconfined ends of straps, traces, &c., would flap about or curl up and present an unsightly appearance, besides being much in the way. Its structure, application, and mode of use are plainly disclosed in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a face view of two pieces of an ordinary harness-as, for instance, a portion of a breast-collar and the front end of a tug or trace-with this loop applied. Fig. 2 is an edge'view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of the under strap or part with the loose strap removed so as to show the collapsible character of the loop. Fig. 4 is a face view of the adjustable spring-loop detached from its seat of application. Fig. 5 is a'transverse sectional view of two straps or parts taken through the middle of the loop.
It is not uncommon with harness inpresent use to find the end of a strap protruding a considerable distance beyond the loop which is designed to confine it. This is due sometimes to the strap being taken up to a short bight and sometimes to improper relative proportion of parts. In either case it presents an unsightly appearance for such protruding ends to curl up or hang loosely flapping about. The device herein described is provided to take care of such loose ends, and it also constitutes. a provision for confining one strap to another, as will be pointed out hereinafter.
My invention is made of spring-wire bent in reflecting loops to substantially the form shown in Fig. 4. This spring-loop A may have as many reflections b b b b as may be necessary,
and the terminals of the wire are pointed or sharpened down to a thin edge and bent to an acute angle with the length of the strap to which it is to be applied. These sharpened ends,or tangs, as they may properly be called, are shown ate 0, and are intended to pierce the edges of the strap to which they may 5 5 be applied, as shown at c c, Fig. 5. The peculiar configuration of the spring-loop permits distention laterally, so as to accommodate itself to various widths of strap, and after its attachment to a strap, as seen in Fig. 3,th e plane of the loops b b b can be lifted, so as to pass under them another strap, as in Fig. 2. The tangs may be inserted at any point in the edge of the strap without any special preparation, their shape being such that they may be 6 readily pressed into the leather, or, if necessary, a hole first pierced with an awl to receive them is all that is necessary.
The special advantages of this detachable spring-loop over leather or non-elastic metallic 7o loops are that this may be applied to any position on the under strap, and, by reason of its distensible spring features, it may be applied to straps of various widths without any special adaptation of the loop or previous preparation of the strap to which it is to be attached.
I therefore claim as my invention the following:
An adjustable and detachable spring loop constructed of a single piece of suitable spring wire having its body or central portion consisting of the wire bentback and forth upon itself so as to form reflections or foldings, and havingits ends terminating in prongs or tangs which are bent inwardly and transversely of the body reflections, and adapted to be forced into the edges of the strap to which the loop may be attached, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof I have hereto subscribed my name this 28th day of September, 1894.
STEPHEN R. MONROE.
