' J. S. VINE.
DEVICE FOR AMUSEMENT AND ADVERTISING.
No. 546,264. Patented Sept; 10. 1895;
UNITED S ATns PATENT- JAMES S. VINE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALB TO THE STROBRIDGE LlTl'lOGRAPl-HNG COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR AMUSEMENT AND ADVERTISING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,264, dated September 10, 1895.
Application filed September 11, 1893- Serial No. 485,231. (No model.)
a all whom it may concern:
a it known that I, JAMEs S. VINE, a citiof Great Britain, residing at Cincinnati, so, have invented new and useful Improve- :nts in Devices for Amusement and for Adsising, of. which the following is a specifi- 3n. ily invention relates to devices for adveriig purposes designed to be made attracta by introducing therewith the element of i'isement, and is in the nature of an im- 1 vement upon the subject-matter of Letters out No. 502,896, granted to me under date igust 8, 1893. In said Letters Patent I ascribe a blank of paper or similar foldng material printed in sectional parts and adapted to be folded in a particular manner bring the printed parts together to repreant an amusing oreatures face, and presentgi-pockets at the rear for the reception of a thumb and contiguous lingv rs of the hand, .d by movement of the fi' ;s to open the 'outh of the face to d I e an advertisement hidden by closing the month. My pres ent improvement consists in a spring-clip adapted to take the place of the fingers in the manual operation of the device, as described in said Letters Patent, whereby the proper action is assured and simplified, and in the combination therewith of the blank described.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 represent the blank opened and folded, respectively. Figs. 3 and at are perspective elevations of the device, showing the clip attached and the device in closed and open positions; and Figs. 5 and 6, detail views showing the clip construction.
The blank A is a square piece of paper or ed on the lines act I) 1) cc dd eeff'. The central diagonal square b e b e receives ,no part of the figure, which is printed upon the corner spaces lying outside of the square designated. The exterior of the face is divided into four equal parts by vertical and horizontal cross-lines, and the divided portions printed severally upon corner squares de- "ined by the folding lines a a, c c, d d, and while the interior of the mouth is dil I I 7 other stiff folded material adapted to be fold- Vided into eight triangular portions and printed in the triangular spaces lying adjacent to the squares just mentioned outside of the central square I) e b e, in proper relations to appear together, as herein specified.
The blank A is first folded back from the observer across the corners on the lines of the diagonal square I) e b c, and next folded.
forward toward the observer on the lines of the interior square a c c a with the points I) e b c meeting at the center. Next the blank is folded forward on the central crosslines, receding the central meeting point just referred to, and bringing points a c a c together, as indicated in Fig. 2, showing the face with the mouth closed. In this position of the outer corners of the blank bound deep pockets at the rear, separated by folds of the material, and by insertion of the fingers the folded blank maybe manipulated to open the mouth, as described in my said former patent. In this operation, however, to insure the proper effect it was necessary to keep the first and second fingers and the thumb and the third finger in close contact, respectively, While opening and closing them in pairs to open and close the mouth of the figure, which apparently simple operation is to many people perplexing and difficult. I have therefore devised a clip B, consisting of two pivotal members g and h, of wood or other inexpensive material, each consisting of a rectangular strip thickened at the center cross-line and wedge-shaped thence outwardly at each end. At the central line one of said members g is provided with a semicylindrical enlargement g extending crosswise above its general surface, and the other member h is provided with corresponding socket h, similarly located and sunk below the general surface.
The members g and h are placed together, the cross enlargement of one in the crosssocket of the other in pivotal relations, and the front ends of the members are encircled by a rubber band a" or other suitable spring and normally held together, thereby spreading the rear ends apart. The front ends of the clip are slotted, as at i1, longitudinally in acommon plane, when the parts are together, as described, extending centrally inward from the extreme front edges.
When the blank A is folded, as described, the clip B is engaged therewith by slipping the rear foldsm and n, Fig. 3, into the slots i 2' of the members 9 h, the clip members engaging the blank at the cross-lines a: y, Fig. 1, at the fold-line b b at the rear side, and by forcing the rear ends of the clip together, as indicated in Fig. 4, the mouth of the creature is opened, producing an amusing effect.
By engaging the clip in a similar manner with the fold o and its corresponding opposite foldand operating it as described the face of the figure is opened outward laterally, producing an unexpected, startling, and
highly-amusing effect.
The members g h are independent and detachable and, without slipping off the rubber band, may be detached and brought side by side, as shown in Fig. 6, for convenience of mail tranportation.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of theUnited States 1. In combination with a foldable blank ornamented as described, a spring clip embodying two pivotal members slotted at their front ends and adapted to engage the folded blank substantially as set forth.
2. In a device of the character indicated, a clip embodying in combination the members, g, h, constructed and slotted as described, with a-rubber band or other spring holding them together in position as shown, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JAMES S. VINE.
