Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICEO ANDREW J. SELLON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPRovED KNIFEfcLEANER.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 54,612, dated May 8, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW J. SELLoN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Knife-Cleaner; and I do hereby declare. the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represen ted in the accompanying drawings, of Which- Figure -1 is a top view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of it.
In these drawings, A denotes a tablet cov* ered with leather, a, on its upper surface, and provided with a handle, b, and a projection or abutment, c, to extend from it in manner substantially as represented. i
There is arranged directly across the middle of the tablet an elastic roller, B, formed of a cylindrical tube, d, of india-rubber, and a metallic shaftor axle, c, going through such tube, the said shaft or axle, at or near its extremities, being supported by, and so as to be capable of revolving in, two metallic cheeks or standards, fj', fastened to the opposite sides of the tablet and arranged therewith in manner as shown in the drawings.
Underneath the roller, and on the upper surface of the tablet and its covering, is a channel or groove, g, which extends across the tablet, and is for the purpose of holding the powder or material to be employed in cleaning a knife.
In using the instrument the tablet is to rest on a table or bench with the abutment against the edge thereof, one hand of the operative grasping the handle. Having put a quantity 'of powdered brick-dust, sand, emery, or rottenstone on the upper surface of the leather covering and in the groove g, he is to pass the blade of the knife between the tablet and the roller and move the blade quickly lengthwise back and forth. The roller will keep the knifeblade in close contactwith the cleaning part of the tablet, the groove serving to hold and collect the cleaning material and to enable it to act on the blade. The covering of the tablet answers to polish or aid in polishing the blade.
I claim- 1. The knife-cleaner composed of the elastic roller, the covered tablet, and the groove thereof, such tablet being provided with a handle, as specified.
2. The combination and arrangem-entof the abutment with the tablet and the elastic roller, arranged as specified.
ANDREW J. SELLON.
