TH READ-PACKAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,123, date-d September 10, 1885. Application tiled June 11,1895. Serial No. 552,386. (No modeLl v To @K whom it may con/cern.:
Be it known that I, XVILLIAM C. SCHROEDER, of La Porte, in the county of La Porte and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thread-Packages, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to animproveinent in thread-packages, in which provision is made for inclosing a skein of silk or other thread to within the casing, and providing a smooth and efficient bearing over Which the threads of the skein may be drawn when it is desired to use them.
A practical embodiment of my invention is f5 represented in the accompanying drawings,
in which Figure l represents the casing as it appears when spread out in sheet form before being folded. Fig. 2 represents the bearing-piece zo partially folded. Fig. 3 represents the bearing-piece completely folded and the skein of thread located in position therein. Fig. 4 represents the casing folded to conceal the skein as in use. Fig. 5 represents the bearing-piece 2 5 formed separate from the body portion and attached thereto by sonne suitable gum, and Fig. 6 represents a bearingpiece with broadened base.
The body portion of the casing consists, in
3o the present instance, of a back A and side flaps or Wings A A2, the latter being in the present instance provided with a gnmmed face or edge for the purpose of sealing the package after the skein has been inserted therein.
The bearingpiece is preferably formed by a continuation of the back piece A, forming an extension d, having wings a a2 severed from the Win gs A A2 and adapted to be folded 4o the one over the other toward the extended back o.. lVhen so folded, the extension d, together with its folded wings, is first folded downwardly into engagement with the inner face of the back A, and its end is then folded over, forming a bight dwithin which the skein B is to be received, and which serves to separate the opposite sides of the skein and form a bearing for the withdrawal of the threads of the skein, as may be required. 5o After the last foldhas been xnadethe flaps A and Azof the bodyof the casing are folded the one over the other, and the extended end of the bearing-piece is finally folded downwardly' over the folded flaps A Agand either f left free or secured by some suitable gulnto the body, as desired. The opposite end of the skein from that which is received on the bearing-piece is preferably permitted to extend from the casing, as shown at t), and may be provided with a tag b', which conveniently 6o serves the purpose ofY separating the opposite sides of the skein from one another at that end.
The bearingpiece hereinbefore described has the advantage of being reinforced by the folded end flaps of the extension, so that its edges are smooth and sufficiently rounded to prevent any liability of the threads being chafed or cutting out the bearing as they are withdrawn therefrom. The bearing itself is 7o also inclosed within the sides of the casing, forming a complete protection for the end ot' the skein, and if the extreme end ofthe bearing-piece be not secured to the casing it will admit of being withdrawn from Within the casing in case there should be a desire to get at that end of the skein.
It is obvious that the bearing-piece might be formed separate and secured tothe end of the body of the casing, as shown in Fig. 5, in- 8o stead of being formed integral With the body of the casing, but the integral forni is found preferable in practice.
The bearing-piece represented by d2, Fig. 6, has its base out on aslant,so that the fold eX-1 tends outo the wings, and they assist i-n resisting the strain when the thread is pulled.
What I claim isl. A thread package, comprising a folded body portion, an end portion reinforced by folded flaps and further folded Within the end of the casing, forming a bearing over which the threads of the skein may be withdrawn from the package, substantially as set forth.
2. The' thread package, comprising the 95 folded body portion and the .end portion formed integral with the body portion and reinforced by folded flaps, the said end portion' being further folded Within the end of the casing to form a bearing over which the roe threads of the skein may be withdrawn, subskein and a further fold over the end of one stantially as set forth.
side of the body portion, substantially as set The thread. package, comprising the forth.
folded body portion, and the end portion reinforced by folded naps, the said end portion having :L fold Within the end ot' the body of the casing as the bearing for the end of the WILLIAM C. SCHROEDER. Witnesses:
