LID FOR ALCOHOL-LAMPS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,108, dated. September 10, 1895.

Be it known that 1, Louis WOJIDKOW, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lids for Alcohol- Lamps, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in lids or tops for alcohol-lamps, the object beingto provide a device of this character which shall be simple and economical to manufacture, and which shall be so constructed that the flame maybe entirely extinguished thereby, or, when desired, reduced in size.

Withthese and other ends in view my invention consists in a lid of the proper size and shape to fit upon or over an alcohol-lamp and having a central opening therein, said lid being provided with an auxiliary lid to cover the said opening, the auxiliary lid being secured to and operated by the handle attached to the lid proper.

My invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an alcohol-lamp and a lid constructed in accordance with my invention, the auxiliary lid being raised or opened. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view taken through the auxiliary lid and its attaching parts. Figs. 4. and 5 are detail views.

, Referring to the drawings, represents an alcohol-lamp, made of any desired shape or size, and B a lid therefor of corresponding size and adapted to rest or fit upon said lamp. In the center ofthe lid proper B is formed an opening I), of smaller diameter than the opening in the top of the lamp. To the top of the lid B are secured the bearings 0, made of a single piece of metal, preferably shaped .as shown in Fig. 4-that is, a single piece of metal provided with the arms or extensions 0, which when the same are turned up form the bearings c 0. In practice when it is desired to extinguish the flame of the lamp A the lid proper B is placed on top of saidlamp, the auxiliary lid being closed down on said lid proper and covering the opening therein. If it is desired to simply reduce the size of the flame and not wholly extinguish it, the auxiliary lid is allowed to remain open, the flame of the lamp issuing through the opening I). When the parts are in this adjustment, the flame may be entirely extinguished by simply turning or revolving the handle O, thereby closing the auxiliary lid, said handle 0 thus performing several functions-viz., acting as a handle for the lid proper, a handle for the auxiliary lid, and affording means for opening and closing the latter.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A lid for an alcohol lamp consisting of a lid proper, having a' central opening therein, and provided with a handle, and an auxiliary lid immovably secured to said handle, and adapted to be raised or lowered when said handle is revolved, substantially as described.

2. A lid for an alcohol lamp consisting of a lid proper, having an opening therein and provided with a handle fitting in bearings adapted when the latter is turned to cover secured to said lid, and an auxiliary lid sesaid opening, substantially as described.
