Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July '7, 1914.
Application filed November 29,1913. Serial No. 803,707.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Anonrn J. EILAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful In'iprovements in Milliners Irons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in milliners irons, the present embodiment being particularly designed and adapted to meet the demands of milliners in pressing the crowns and brims of hats, shaping, etc., and is adapted to be heated by e ectricity, gas, or some other suitable and convenient heating medium.
The primary obiect of the invention is to provide a genera ly improved iron of this class, of exceedingly simple, cheap, and efficient construction or use in the art of hatting for transmitting the heat to some portion of the hat body during the shaping or pressing of the same.
A further object is to improve the construction and arrangement of parts as well as to adapt the main bod portion of the iron to different forms of lieating elements such as a gas burner, electric resistance coil, or the like.
A still further object is to provide improved means for quickly and conveniently attaching the iron handle to or detaching the same from the body of the iron containing the heatin element or unit.
Nitli the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended clalms.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification Figure 1, is a perspective view of the improved iron in its asscmbled or operative position. Fig. 3, a top plan view of the attaching or supportingdisk plate adapted to support the heating element or unit, for example a gas burner, electric resistance. coil, or the like. Fig. 4, a detail view of the guide bracket for supporting the latching pin carried by the base or attaching portion of the handle. Fig. 5, a detail top plan view of the handle bracket, the handle and latching pin being removed for the purpose of clearer illustration of the parts.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved iron comprises a main body portion 1, preferably of spherical or ball shape, and provided with an opening or rece tacle 1, extending from the top and a apted to receive and contain the heating unit or element, in the present instance, in the form of an electric heating or resistance coil 1. The heating unit or resistance coil may be carried upon a supporting or attaching disk (plate 2, which latter is adapted to be secure by means of a plurality of screws 3. The screws 3, are threaded into the top of the body 1, and in the present instance, pass through a series of screw receiving notches 3', see Fig. 3) arranged about the peri hery o the plate or cover 2.
T e heater receptacle 1, is preferably provided at its mouth with an off-set portion 1, corresponding in thickness to the marginal edges of the cover or supportin plate 2, so that the latter will extend fine with the top of the cylindrical body 1, when in proper osition as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, of t e rawings.
The handle 4, is preferably of wood, or other suitable non-conductor of heat, and is mounted between and connected to suitable brace or handle arms 5.
As a means for conveniently attaching the handle arms 5, to and detaching the same from the body of the iron, the base portion 5, of the handle bracket is provided with openings 6, the latter being provided with slot extensions (3, and when it is desired to fasten the handle to the iron the openings (3, are brought into re istry with the screw heads 7, rojecting above the plate or cover 2, and w en the base portion 5, is seated upon the plate 2, the base portion is moved longitudinally thereby causing the slot extensions 6, to move underneath the screw heads 7, in a well known and understood manner.
As a means for latchingthe handle bracket in its secured position, the base portion 5, of the bracket is rovided with an opening 5", adapted to be brought into registry with a second opening 2, in the disk or cover plate 2, and said base portion 5, is further provided with a guide bracket 8, extending above the opening 5, and provided with an pin and the other abutting beneath the top of the guide bracket 8.
When it is desired to detach the handle from the body of the iron the latch in 9, is raised against the resistance of t e coil spring 10, through the medium of the hand e top 9, after which the base portion 5', of the handle bracket may be moved longitudinally to detach the same from the (115K or cover plate 2, of the iron body.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages and operation of my invention will be readil understood.
Having thus describe one of the embodiments of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. A milliners iron, comprising a ballshaped body rovidcd with a centrally located cylindrical shaped receptacle, the latter terminating at its mouth in an annular ofi-set portion, a supporting disk plate normally covering said receptacle and seated in said off-set portion,a heater element detachably carried on said disk plate and removably disposed within said receptacle, and a handle and handle bracket detachably connected to said disk plate.
2. A milliners iron, comprising a ballshaped body rovidcd with a centrally located cylindrical-shaped receptacle terminating at one side of said body in a circularshaped off-set portion, a circular-sha ed supporting plate removably mounted wit iin said circular-she. d off-set portion, a cylindricalsha ed heating unit detachably connected to sai su porting disk plate and removably mounted within said cylindrical shaped receptacle, and a handle and handle )rackct detachably connected to the to side of said an portin disk plate independently of said cy 'ndrica shaped heating unit.
