SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,969, dated September 10, 1895.

Be it known that I, WALTER MoCoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Conway, in the county of McPherson and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Combined Clamp and Vrench for Tire-Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in a combined clamp and wrench for tire-bolts.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient combined clamp and Wrench adapted for removing nuts from and for applying them to tire-bolts and capable of securely holding the head of a bolt and adapted to be readily adjusted to accommodate itself to the size of a wheel and to the-size of a nut.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1. is a perspective view of a combined clamp and wrench constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view showing the combined clamp and wrench engaging a tire-bolt. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the lugs. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the nut-engaging block of the clamp. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the wrenchshaft, the nut-engaging block or socket being detached.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures of the drawings.
1 designates a substantially L-shaped bar or stock,having its arm 2 depending and laterally offset by an angular bend, and mounted on the arm 2 is an adjustable felly-engaging jaw or arm 3, which is curved or substantially L-shaped and which is provided at its inner end with a socket 4, receiving the depending arm of the bar or stock 1, and secured at any desired adjustment by a clamping-screw 5. The main portion of the stock or bar 1 has slidingly mounted on it an adjustable boltengaging block 6,'having a tapering point, depending from the stock or bar, for engaging the head of the bolt at the tire of the wheel. The adjustable block 6 is provided with an opening for the reception of the stock or bar and has at the top of the openinga spring 7, disposed-longitudinally of the stock or bar and frictionally engaging the same and securing the block at the desired adjustmentV and enabling the same to be readily shifted to position it properly over the head of a bolt. The opening of the block is preferably formed by an L-shaped extension, forming a continuation of one side of the tapered portion of the block and extending over one face and edge of the stock or bar, and a pair of lugs 8 projecting from the top of the L-shaped extension and from the tapered portion of the block and engaging the inner face of the stock or bar.
The inner end of the stock or bar is pivoted by a bolt 9 to a lever 10 at a point intermediate of the ends of the latter, and the lever has its inner or rear end shaped into a handle 11, and its front or outer end is laterally bent at 12 to clear the wheel and is provided with a depending substantially L-shaped bearing 13, terminating at its lower end beneath the folly. The L -shaped bearing is provided with a long tubular portion forming a bearing for an operating-shaft 14, and it has a short tubular portion or bearing-opening 15, receiving a wrench-shaft 16, and the shafts are connected beyond the L-shaped bearing by gear-wheels 17. The operating-shaft is provided with a crank-handle 18, bynieans of which the wrench-shaft is rotated, and the wrench-shaft is provided with a socket 19,10- cated directly beneath the felly when the device is applied in position to a Wheel, asillustrated in Fig. 2 ofthe accompanying drawings.
The socket of the wrench-shaft is cylindrical and is provided at opposite sides with openings 20 and has detachably secured within it, by a screw 2l, a nut-engaging block or socket 22, having a rectangular opening. The nut-engaging block or socket has its engaging-face slightly tapered or rounded to enable it to fit closelyl against the felly in order to engage a nut which may have only a small portion of it exposed; and the nutengaging block or socket is removable to permit other blocks or sockets having different sizes of openings to be employed to correspond with the size of the nuts to be operated on. In removing a nut it is permitted by the Wrench to recede freely from the felly,

and after leaving the bolt it drops out of the wrench through either of the side openings 20.
The clamp is fulcrumed on the head of a bolt by the adjustable block, as will readily be seen, and the leverage is very great, as the fulcrum is located close to the arm or jaw for engaging under the felly; but the fulcrum or pivot point of the lever 10 is much farther from the rotary wrench, and the pressure of the latter on the felly is much less than that exerted on the head of a bolt. By this arrangement the bolt is securely held with the desired pressure without exerting too great a pressure on the felly, thereby avoiding all liability of injuring the felly either by breaking the paint or crushing the wood.
The pivotal movement of the lever lOon the stock is limited by a pair of lugs 24, located j at the bolt 9 and projecting laterally from the edges of the lever and arranged to be engaged f by the stock or bar l. These lugs allow sufficient movement of the clamp and wrench on each other to accommodate any size of wheel, and at the same time prevent the parts from coming in contact with each other or swinging backward too far and getting out of proper position.
It will be seen that the combined Wrench y and clamp is simple, inexpensive, and eifective; that it possesses the requisite strength and durability; that it is capable of exerting minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle 'or sacrificing any of the advantages of this inof a bolt and having an arm for engaging unl der a felly, a lever pivoted to the inner end vention.
What I claim isl. rlhe combination of a stock or bar provided with a fulcrum for engaging the head of a bolt and having an arm or jaw for engaging under a felly, and a lever pivoted to the stock or bar and provided with a rotary Q wrench arranged to engage the nut of a bolt, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a substantially L-j shaped stock or bar provided on its main portion with a fulcrum and having its other portion extending downward and offset to clear a wheel, an adjustable arm or jaw mounted on the offset portion and arranged to engage under a felly, and a leverfulcrumed on the stock or bar and. provided with a rotary wrench arranged to engage the nut of a bolt, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a substantially L- shaped stock or bar having a depending laterally offset portion, a block provided with a tapering point and having an opening receiving the main portion of the stock or bar, said block being provided with a spring frictionally engaging thestock or bar, an arm or jaw mounted on the offset portion for engaging under a felly, and a lever fulorumed on the stock or bar and carrying a rotary wrench, substantially as described.
4. The combinationof a substantially L- shaped stock or bar, having one of its arms depending and laterally offset, an adjustable block mounted on the main portion of the stock or bar and depending therefrom, a jaw or arm provided with a socket to receive the depending portion of the stock or bar and provided with a clamping screw for engaging the same, and a lever fulcrumed on the stock or bar and provided with a rotary wrench, substantially as described.
5. The combination of a clamp provided with a fulcrum for engaging the head of a bolt and having an arm for interlocking under a felly, a lever pivoted to the clamp and having a depending bearing, a wrench shaft mounted in said bearing and provided with a socket having an opening at the base for the passage of a nut, a removable block mounted in a socket and having a nut-receiving opening, and gearing for rotating the wrench shaft, substantially as described.
6. The combination of a stock or bar provided with a fulcrum for engaging the head of the stock or bar and provided with lugs projecting laterally from its edges and limiting the movements of the stock or bar and the lever, and a rotary wrench mounted on the lever, substantially as described.
