Description

i (No Model.) l S. A. D. REYNOLDS. BREAST STRAP COUPLING.
150,545,724. Patented Sept. 3, 1895.
WITNESSES. [NYE/V7072.
PATENT FICE.
STEPHEN A. D. REYN LDS, OF GIRARD, ILLINOIS.
BREAST-STRAP COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,724, dated September 3, 1895.
Application filed March 29, 1895.
T0 at whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, STEPHEN A. D. REY- NOLDS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Girard, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Breast-Strap Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in breast-strap couplings for the neck-yokes of vehicle-poles, and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in operation.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a neck-yoke, showing my improvement applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a similar View of the coupling detached.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both the figures.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a neck-yoke, which may be of any ordinary or usual construction, and 2 the ring near one end thereof with which the breaststrap couplings are connected.
The breaststrap coupling, shown more clearly in Fig. 2, consists of a metal bar 3, having a bend 08 depression 4: at its center and having its ends bent into hooks 5. With the hook at the inner end of said bar is connected a triangle 6, which in turn is connected with a strap 7, which engages with the ring 8, secured to the inner section of the hame. To the other or outer hook is connected a ring 9, to which is secured a strap 10, connected with a ring 12, attached to the outer hamesect-ion. Connected with the ring 9 isalso a pole-strap 13, which leads to and is connected with the belly-band ofthe harness.
The manner of using the device will be ob- Serial a. 543,692. (No model.)
vious to those skilled in the art to which the invention pertains when taken in connection with the above description and the drawings.
Some of the advantages gained by the invention are that it is more convenient to fasten, and it prevents wear of the breast-strap by the ring of the neck-yoke. It does away with the trouble of putting the pole-strap over the end of the neck-yoke for use, and when disconnected the pole-strap is supported from the outer section of the hame without further attention. Each pole-strap also draws from the ring of the neck-yoke, giving each horse the same leverage in backing the vehicle. The device also reduces the swing of the pole on rough roads.
I am well aware that breast-strap couplings have been made before comprising a metallic hook-shaped coupling or connection adapted to be attached removably to the hook or ring at opposite ends of the neck-yoke bar in combination with straps connecting this coupling with the hames and the belly-band of a harness; nor do I claim such construction broad- 1y, but
What I doclaim as my specific improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
The combination with the neck yoke bar 1, provided with the ring 2, of the metallic coupling herein shown and described, comprising the short intermediate curved rod or bar 3, having its ends bent into hooks 5, the triangle 6 connected with one of said hooks and with the strap 7, adapted to be connected with the inner section of a hame, the ring 9, connected with the other hook and with a strap adapted to be connected with the outer section of a hame, and the strap 13, connected with ring 9 and adapted to be connected with a pole or tongue, substantially as specified.
In'testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
