W. BOOTH & S. STURGIS. DUMPING WAGON.
No. 545,264. Patented Aug. 27, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT EErcE,
WILLIAM BOOTH, OF GLADWYNE, AND SAMUEL STURGIS, OF WEST MANA- YUNK, PENNSYLVANIA.
DUMPlNG-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,264, dated August 27, 1895.
Application filed March 5,1894. Renewed July 25, 1895- $erial No. 557,093. tNo model.)
for garbage, coal, disc, the same permitting the drainage of the material, and the body is formed with a dischargechute and so mounted as to cause the effective and rapid discharge of the contents of the body, the construction of the parts being hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a dumping-wagon embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 8 represents a transverse vertical section of a portion thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the body of a wagon, and B the sills of the truck thereof. On the sides of the body are the journals 0, which are mounted in the bearings D, which latter are secured to the sills B. The tail endA of the body slopes from the top of the same downwardly and forwardly, thus forming with the lid E the dis charge-chute F. To the sides of the body are secured the plates G, which strengthen said sides and also the connection of the journals 0 with said body.
H designates a false bottom within the body A above the bottom J proper, the same being hinged to one end of the body, so as to be readily raised and lowered, said bottom being also perforated and supported on posts K, which rise from the bottom. It will be seen that the bottom H sustains the load or contents of the body and that drainage from the same enters the chamber between the two bottoms and may be readily discharged therefrom, especially if in the form of water from garbage, washed coal, 630., through the valves and hose attachments L, which are connected with the body below the bottom H, at the ends thereof.
Owing to the body being mounted on the sills B, when it is dumped its forward end is raised a great height, whereby it presents a more acute angle to the ground, and thus the load or contents may be effectively and rap idly discharged, it being evident that the slope of the tail end of the body also permits the lowering of the body when dumped to a greater extent than if said end was right- 6o angular. When the body is dumped, the bottom H may be raised and the dust or matter that has passed through said bottom may be discharged through the chute.
The springs M of the Wagon are interposed between and secured to the sills and hind axle.
Having thus described our invention, What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A dumping wagon having a perforated 7:: false bottom and posts rising from the bottom proper, the false bottom being hinged to the body of said wagon and resting on said posts, substantially as described.
2. A dumping wagon consisting of a body having a tail end sloping inwardly from the top to the bottom, a hinged perforated false bottom, posts on the bottom proper, on which the false bottom rests, and a valve on the body below said false bottom, said parts be- So ing combined substantially as described.
3. A dumping wagon having its bottom provided with a perforated false bottom, and posts on the bottom proper, said false bottom being removably supported on said posts, so b- S 5 stantially as described.
' 4.. A dumping wagon having a body provided with journals on the sides thereof, above the sills of the wagon, a perforated false bottom, and posts on the bottomproper, said false bottom being removably supported on said posts, and the parts named combined substantially as described.
5. A dumping wagon having a body provided with journals on the sides thereof, above 9 5 the sills of the wagon, a sloping tail end, a perforated false bottom, and posts on the bottom proper, said false bottom being removably supported on said posts, and the parts named combined substantially as described.
