SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,098, dated August 27, 1895.

Be it known that I, HENRY W. SoHLoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refrigerators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to refrigerators or cooling receptacles, and its object is to save the space usually devoted to such receptacles and also to make use of the cold air outside of the house in winter time as a preservative agent and dispense with the costly apparatus ordinarily used to attain the same result.

My invention comprehends a receptacle hinged to a support adjacent to a window and arranged to be lifted upon the window-sill for access to its contents, while normally located in a position where it does not obstruct the window or interfere in any way .with its use.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the window of a house, showing my improved refrigerator attached thereto; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, showing, in dotted lines, modifications in the arrangement.

Referring to the drawings by letter, a represents a receptacle or box of any kind. It may be made of any shape or material; but I prefer to construct it of wood or paper, to be light, and therefore easily lifted. The receptacle is hinged at each end to the windowsill by means of the links 12 in such manner that it may be lifted by the handle a? and swung on to the window-sill, as indicated in Fig. 2, where it may rest while its contents are removed or replenished. The side of the receptacle adjacent to the Wall may be left open for access; if so, the wall will act as a cover when the box is in its lower position, or a special door may be provided. It may be desirable, in order to lessen the strain upon the links and thereby reduce to a minimum the danger of the receptacle falling to the ground, that suitable supports obe provided, upon which the receptacle may rest when in its normal position. The same result may be accomplished by forming a recess 0 in the wall under the window-sill, into which the receptacle will swing and there rest upon the floor of the recess and also be protected from falling objects, and, to a certain extent, from the weather.

The invention is designed for use in apartment-houses, where the saving of, space is of great advantage; but obviously it may be applied to any house.

The invention is also intended for use as a refrigerator in winter-time, but in summer maybe utilized for the storage of any articles, and its use as a refrigerator may be continued in summertime by employing ice in the usual manner. In someinstances, however, ice will not be necessary when using the receptacle as a refrigerator in summer-time-as, for 1nstance, where the wall to which it is hinged 1s not exposed to the rays of the sun.

The manner of supporting the box by the links or hinges is a minor matter, and'any device or apparatus may be used for connecting the box with the wall or sill, so long as the box may be lifted into position for access wheneverrequired and dropped back to a safe and out-of-the-way position when not inuse.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination with a building provided with a window, of a box or receptacle for the purpose described, said box having one side open for access to its contents and being pivoted to the building at a pointbelow the window and normally resting against the wall of the building with the latter acting as a cover for the open side of the'box, and two links pivoted at their extremities respectively to the box and the building, whereby the box may be swung upward above its connections with the wall and onto the window sill to expose and make accessible its contents, substantially as described.
