UNITED STATES PATENT OEETEE.
JULIUS L. HANSON, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
TROLLEY.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,073, dated August 27, 1895.
Application filed June 4, 1895. Serial No. 551,695. (No model.)
This invention has relation to a new and, novel lmprovement in trolley-stands, the obj ect being to provide a trolley-stand adapted to be used more particularly in connection with electric-motor cars.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 showsja side elevation of my improved trolleystand. Fig. 2 shows a top view of the supporting-post. Fig. 3 shows the springs open and detached, while Fig. 4 shows my improved trolley-stand as depressed into its lowest possible position.
A represents a suitable base-plate of any desired size, by means of which my improved stand is secured to the car-deck. Extending upwardly from this plate is an ordinary cylindrical post B, which post is adapted to revolubly hold a sleeve 0, having the outwardly and downwardly curved arm D. This bracket is further provided with the bear ear E, as is shown more clearly in Fig. 2. This sleeve Cis held upon the post B by means of the flange a. Working between the ears E is a hub F, held by means of the pin 2, which hub is provided with a rearwardly-extending ear G, adapted to hold the trolley-bar H. Adjustably secured to the bar H by means of the sleeve I is a hinge 5, one end of which is secured to the ear 4 of the sleeve I. Extend ing from this hinge 5 is a plate K, provided with a bar 6, provided in front with a recurved ear 7, which works over a sleeve 8, fixed to the spring-stem 9, as shown in Fig. 3. The bar 6 is revolubly held upon this sleeve 8.
Adjustably secured to the bracket-arm D is a sleeve L, provided with a set-screw 10 and ear 11, which car 11 is adapted to engage a hub 12 for the plate M, which hub 12 is engaged by said ear 11. Extending from this plate M is a bar 20, the end of which is recurved to form an car 21, passing over the sleeves 22, secured to the spring-stem 30.
The spring'stem 9 continues in the form of a ring, and continues approximately at right angles thereto, ending in the stem 9, secured to the plate M. The spring -stem continues in a ring ending in the spring-stem 35, extending approximately at right angles to the stem 30 and being secured to the plate K, as shown in Fig 3. In their normal positions the springs 9, 9', 30, and force the bar 11 from the arm D, so that the springs approximately lie within one plane, as shown in Fig. 1. As the trolley-bar is depressed, however, the bars 6 and 20 are brought nearer to the bars M and K, respectively, in the manner of a hinge, so that there is exerted a torsion which the rings of the stems resist. As the plates M and K act in the form of a hinge, the fixed stems 35 and 9 would be carried outward. By virtue of the sleeve I passing in an arc to meet the sleeve L, this necessitates a revolving of the stems 9 and 30, which is permitted by means of the ears 7 and 21 loosely working upon the sleeves 22 and 8. This spring is exceedingly cheap, and is made adjustable by means of the sliding collars I and L, provided, respectively, with the set-screws 3 and 10.
Now, having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to obtain by United States Letters Patent, is
1. In a trolley stand the combination with a suitable base plate and post, of a hub revolubly held upon said post, said hub being pro vided with an extending arm, and ears, a trolley pole movably secured to said ears, an adjustable sleeve upon said extending arm, and adjustable sleeves upon said trolley pole, an extending bar movably secured to said arm-sleeve, a bar movably secured to said pole-sleeve, a spring bar movably secured to said arm-sleeve continuing in a ring and terminating in a stem, said stem being movably secured to the bar extending from said polesleeve, a spring bar movably secured to said pole-sleeve and continuing in a ring and end ing in a stem, said stem being movably s-e-- cured to said bar extending from said bracket-sleeve, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with the base plate, A,
provided with the extending post, B, of the M, the fixed bar, 6, extending from said plate,
K, the spring, 9, extending in a ring and being movably held by said fixed bar, 6, the spring, 35, extending in a ringentwining said springs, 9 and 9, the end, 30, being movably secured to the bar, 20, all arranged substantiall'y as and for the purpose set forth.
' In testimony whereof I al'lix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
