H. E. lVIGARrIHUEIl CERTIFICATE HQLDBR.
Patented Aug. 20,1895.
S INS/DE STAT Cro UNH/ED To ENGVINEERSRSOFFI-G vTHIS. ST0 CERTIFY THAT UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY E. MOARTHUR, OF SAGINAW, MICHIGAN.
CERTIFICATE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,993, dated August 20, 1895. Application filed March l, 1895. Serial No. 540,222. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY E. McAR'rHUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Certificate-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description 'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertans to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certificate-holders.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will securely retain the certificate or card to be displayed therein and to do away with the ordinary wooden backing and tacks formerly used for securing the backing and certificate in the frame; furthermore, to provide a novel lock for securing the parts of thc holder together, and, finally, to provide a holder which will be simple of construction, durable in use, and inexpensive of production.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front view of my improved certificate-holder. Fig. 2 is a rear View of the same; and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same, taken on line :r
` of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, l denotes the frame, the front or face of which may be of any suitable outline andbe ornamented as desired. This frame ispreferably made of sheet metal and is provided around its inner edge on the rear side thereof with an angular iiange 2.
3 denotes the back of the frame, which is provided at its sides and lower edge with Iianges 4 to forni a pocket for the reception of. the certificate or card to be displayed. The lower edge of this back is secured to the lower edge of the frame by a hinge 5. Secured to the upper edge of the back is a bolt- casing 6,4
l2 denotes the keeper, which is secured to the upper edge of the trarne and through which the bolt works.
The certificate or card to be displayed is inserted into the back and is held therein by the bottom and side ianges. The back is now swung on its hinge into the angular fiange of the frame and the bolt is then shot into its keeper and engages a nail which passes through the hole in the bolt. By suspending the holder by the bolt there is no liability of the parts of the holder becoming unlocked. IE desired, I may place behind the certificate in the back a piece of absorbing material 13 such, for instance, as a blotter. This will absorb any moisture and prevent the certificate or card to be displayed sweating.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a frame provided with a keeper, of a back hinged thereto and provided with a bolt casing having an-elon gated opening, and a bolt located in said casing havingastud projecting through the opening in the said casing and provided at its upper end with an aperture, through which a nail is adapted to project and by means of which the holder is supported and the parts thereof retained in a locked position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY E. MCARTHUR.
