Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. MORRIS, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skate-Sharpeners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to an improved skatesharpener; and it consists in the novel conparts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved skatesharpener. Fig. 2 is a perspective of one of the files of which I make use in carrying out my invention. Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of a second form of file made use of.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates an angular head constructed of any suitable material, with which is formed integral an upwardly-extending shank 2, upon which is located a suitable wooden or metallic handle 3. V A nut 4 is located upon the upper end of said shank 2 and retains said handle 3 upon said shank.

Extending longitudinally through the head 1, and in the center thereof, is a rectangular aperture 5, and a vertical slot or passage 6 extends from this rectangular passage. 5 to the lower face of the head 1. In the upper face, of the rectangular passage 5 and extending longitudinally through the head 1 is a concavegroove 7. Set-screws 8, having milled edges on the screw-head, extend through the side walls of the head 1 and into the rectangular passage 5.

9 indicates a rectangular block of such a thickness as that it will fit snugly within the rectangular passage 5, but said block 9 is not as wide as is said rectangular passage. Extending longitudinally along the center of one of the faces of this block 9 is a convex rib 10, the entire face or surface of which is formed identical with that of an ordinary file. In some instances this rib 10 is made slightly V- shaped in cross-section, this form being shown in Fig. 4, and said rib may be made in various other forms, as desired.

The faces of the blocks 9, opposite from the faces on which the ribs 10 are located, are also Serial No. 550,147. (No model) held in the head 1 and in proper position for use. If it is desired to give the lower face of the skate-runner a flat surface, the block 9 is so positioned as that the rib 10 will be on top and located within the depression or groove '7. When the runner of the skate is located in the vertical slot or passage 6 and the entire device is drawn backward and forward over the runner of the skate, said runner can be very easily and quickly sharpened.

Whenever desired the blocks 9 may be so positioned as that the ribs 10 are on the under side and extend into the vertical slot or passage 6. When this is done and the device is properly manipulated, the lower face of the skate-runner may be concaved or grooved, which manner of sharpening is very often desired. As the ribs 10 are not as wide as is t the vertical slot 6, the operator can by properly manipulating the set-screws 8 move the block 9, so as to cause the rib 1O thereon to be located nearer one side of the slot 6 than the other. This adjustment is intended for skates having blades narrower than is the vertical slot 6.

A skate-sharpener of my improved construction is very compact, simple in construction and manipulation, and is very durable and eflicient.

I claim- 1. An improved skate sharpener, compris ing a head having a rectangular slot or passage extending longitudinally through the center thereof, and having a vertically arranged slot or passage extending from the under side of said head to said rectangular passage, a shank formed integral with said head, a handle located upon said shank, set-screws extending through the sides of the head and into the rectangular passage, and a removable block provided with a longitudinally ex tending rib, said rib and block being formed with file faces.
