PATENT OFFICE..
EMANUEL PISKO, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
MACHINE FOR BRANDING CIGARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,519, dated August 13, 1895.
Application led J une 14, 1895- Serial. No. 552,833- (No model.)
10 a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, EMANUEL P1sKo,a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ma# chines for Branding Cigars, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention has reference to an improved machine for branding cigars with the name of the manufacturer, trade mark, or other characters denoting origin in such a manner that the branding is accomplished in a very uniform and effective manner without injury to the wrapper and with consequent small In branding cigars it is absolutely necessary that the brand be produced in a clear and legible manner, and that the cigars be not injured during the branding operation. This is accomplished by myimproved branding-machine, in which a number of cigars are branded at the vsame time by a simple reciprocating motion of the mold containing the cigars, which has the advantage that a machine of comparatively simple construction is obtained, which can be easily operated and which is not liable to get out of order. For this purpose my invention consists of a ma` chine for branding cigars which comprises a bed-plate a, movable plates on which the mold containing the cigars is placed, means for adjusting the position of the mold, means for imparting Vertical reciprocating motion to said platen, a series of branding-dies sup-- ported in spring-cushioned holders, means for adjusting said holders in their guide-casings, and means for heating the branding-dies, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front elevation of my improved machine for branding cigars. Fig. 2 is a plan of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the machine. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section on line 5 5,
Fig. 2, drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 6 is an enlarged vertical transverse section on line 6 6, Fig. 2; and Figs. 7 and 8 are vertical longitudinal sections both on line 7 7, Fig. 2, showing my improved branding-machine respect` ively before branding and while the branding action takes place.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the bed-plate of my improved machine for branding cigars. l
B is a vertically-reciprocating platen which is provided with bottom sockets b, vwhich receive vertical guidepins a of the bed-plate A, 6o
on'which the platen is guided. The middle portion of the platen is made hollow, so as to reduce the weight of the same. Theplaten B is covered by atop plate B of wrought iron or steel, on which the mold M, containing the cigars to be branded, is placed.
The bed-plate A is provided with an up'- wardly-extending rear wall A', which is preferably cast in one piece with the bed-plate, and which is provided with openings for the 7o passage of two adjustable 'gagescrews' m, against the ends of which the mold M is placed. The mold M contains a certain number of cigarssay ten-there being as many branding dies D as there are cigars in the-mold, so that all the'cigarsfcan be branded at the same time.
- The branding-dies D are made of dovetail shape andare inserted into dovetailed sockets of holders D', which are guided in a hori- 8o zontal plate D2, supported abovel the mold, said plate being cast integral with the downwardly-extending rear wall D3, which is provided with recesses d, through which the gagescrews m of the mold are passed. The rear 85 wall D3 is ,further provided with slots d3, through which clam ping-screws d4 are passed, by which the rear `walll D3 is-connected with the rear wall A of the bed-plate A, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. To the upwardly-extending 9o rear plate D3 is attacheda horizontal top platel D4', which is parallel with horizontal VAplate D2 aud provided with holes for the shan-ks of screw-studs e, which are attached at their lower ends into the upper ends of the die-holders D and provided above the horizontal plate D4 with nuts .and jam-nuts c e2. Each of the die-holders D is provided immediately between the screw-studs e with a socketf, in which is arranged a cushioningloo slightly, according to the thickness of the cigars. The cushioning ofthe die-holders is an important feature of my improved brandingmachines, as thereby all waste, which arises in branding-machines heretofore 1n use and l is caused by the exertion of too greata pressure on the cigars while branding the samef is prevented. The branding-dies D are heated 5 by means of gas-jets g, which branch in downward direction from a gas-pipe G toward the 3 rear ends of longitudinal cavities d", that are formed in the holders D above the brandingdies D. The gas-pipe G extends longitudinally through the upper part of the branding- A machine, said pipe being supported by suitable keepers go on the rear wall D3. rear wall D3 is provided below the gas-supply pipe G, and also the top plate D4 above the same, with air-supply openings g g2, respect- The l ively, by which the air required for combustion is supplied, the products of combustion being discharged at the front end of the 1ongitudinal cavities do in the die-holders D. The gas-pipe Gis provided with a gaseock G for turning on the gas, and is connected by a hose with a gas-burner or any other suitable i supply of gas.
Instead of moving the branding-dies toward the cigars, as is the case in the branding-mai chines heretofore in use, the cigars are raisedi toward and in contact with the branding-dies by imparting a vertical reciprocating motion to the platen B, which is accomplished by means of wedges W, which are guided in suitable ways h at the ends of the bed-plate A, said wedges engaging inclined faces B2 at the ends of the lower corners of the platen, which are further provided with projections B3 at their lower ends, which form stops for the upward motion of the platen. The wedges B are moved simultaneously toward or away from each other by means of angular arms r, that are'pivoted to the centers of the wedges W and to the head of a T-shaped lever L, that is fulcrumed at L to an outwardly-projecting eX- tension A2 of the bed-plate intermediately between the pivotof the angular arms r. The
lever L is formed into a suitable handle at its outer end and is preferably located at the rear part of the machine, so that the forward motion of the lever will move the wedges inwardly-that is to say, toward-each otherwhile the outward motion of the lever will move the wedges away from each other and lower the mold-carrying platen B. W'hen the platen is in raised position the cigars are pressed against the cushioned heated dies and receive thereby at the same time the impression from the same. In case of any inequality in the thickness of cigars the spring-cushioned dies give sufficiently so as to produce the branding without injuring the wrapper ofthe cigar and causing waste. As soon as the cigars have been in contact with the brandingdies for the required length of time for producing the proper branding of the same, the operating-lever is moved back again, so that the wedges are moved in outward direction and the platen with the cigars 0n the same is returned hy gravity into its lowered position, as shown in Fig. 7. As all the motions produced in the machine are rectilinear the steadyand reliable motion of the platen is obtained, so that the parts are not liable to get shaky or out of order. A nuinber of cigars are branded at the same time by the simultaneous action of the branding-dies,so that the branding of cigars which are arranged in suitable molds is accomplished in a quick and reliable manner, all the brands being produced4 in clear and legible characters.
Having thus described my. invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a machine for branding cigars, the combination of a vertically reciprocating platen for the cigar mold, means for reciprocating the platen, a series of spring-cushioned dies arranged in a series parallel with the platen, and means for heating the dies, substantially as set forth.
2. In a machine for branding cigars, the combination of a bed plate, a verticallyguided platen on the bed-plate for holding the mold, means for reciprocating said platen, branding-dies above the platen, verticallyguided and spring-actuated holders for supporting said branding-dies, and means for heating the branding-dies, substantially as Vset forth.
3. ln a machine for branding cigars, the combination of a bed-plate, a vertically-reciprocating platen supported on said bed-plate, wedges guided in ways of said bed-plate and adapted to engage the correspondingly inclined lower ends of the platen, means for operatin g said wedge-blocks, and a series of vertically-guided and spring-cushioned branding-dies located above the mold placed on said platen, substantially as set forth.
4. In a machine for branding cigars, the combination of a horizontal guide-plate, dieholders guided in openings of said guideplate, branding-dies secured to the lower ends of said holders, said holders being provided with longitudinal channels, and means for heating said branding-dies, with means for supporting a mold below the dies, substantially as set forth.
