Description
I. LAVENSON. v
BRANDING-STAMP FOR MARKING CANDLES,
t No. 193.372.
Patented July 24,1877.
Inventor itIlQSSQi UNITED STATES ISIDOR LAVENSON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
' I IMPROVEMENT IN BRANDING-ST AIVIPS FOR MARKINGFANDLES.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,372, dated July 24, 1877; application filed May 8, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISIDOR LAVENSON, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improved Oandle-Branding Machine; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My. invention relates to an improved machine for imprinting the name of the manufacturer or other brand or mark upon candles.
My improved machine is so constructed that the operation is rendered quite simple, so that the candles can be handled and branded with great celerity.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a section of the cylinder E.
Let A represent a furnace or heater, which is placed between two upright sides, B B. Across the upper end of this furnace I secure the metal bar O, upon the upper face of which the brand, mark, character,or symbol slot inside of the uprights, as represented, or
some other style of spring can be used.
The under side of the cylinder E is provided with a longitudinal slot, g, directly above the branding-bar O. This slot is long enough to 'allow the bar to pass through it and come in contact with the exposed portion of the candle which is contained in the cylinder.
-H is a lever-bar, one end of which is hinged to a suitable support at a distance from the cylinder E, so that when its opposite end is gropped down it will extend across the cylin- L is an inclined table, which is placed just outside of one of the upright sides B. The lower end of this table is opposite the open end of the cylinder E, and an upright end-board In line with this bar 0, I make.
or stop-bar, 0, extends upward at its end, and serves to stop'the lowermost candle on the incline opposite the end of the cylinder.
When this machine is in operation a gasjet or other modeof heating is applied inside of the furnace or heater A, so that the branding-bar will be heated to the proper or desired temperature. The candles to be branded are placed upon the inclined table or surface L, a single layer in depth, so that as soon as one candle is removed from the lower end of the table, the remaining candles will move down the incline and fill the vacancy. The operator stands at the lower end of the table L, and holds the lever H with his right hand, while he pushes the lowermost candle on the table into the cylinder with his left hand. As each candle enters the cylinder the operator presses the lever H downward, so as to force the branding-bar through the slot 9 against the surface of the candle, and impress the character, mark, or brand upon it. He then removes the pressure from the lever, and the springsff raise both the cylinder and lever away from the branding-bar. The next candle inserted forces the branded candle out of the cylinder as it enters, and the same operation is repeated on each candle. As the candles are removed from thelower end of the table a workman supplies fresh ones at the upper end, so that the operation can be kept up with great speed.
Having thus described my inven tion I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The furnace or heater A, with its branding-iron O, in combination with the cylinder E, with its slot 9, said cylinder being-sup ported upon springs f f above the brandingiron, and operated by the lever H, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with the heater A and branding-iron O and cylinder E, the inclined table L, with its end-board or stop arranged so that the lowermost candle can be pushed directly into the cylinder E, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
ISIDOR LAVENSON.
