EDMOND N. CUSSON AND LOUIS GOULLIOUD, OF MONTREAL, CANADA, SAID GOULLIOUD ASSIGNOR TO SAID OUSSON.
MACHINE FOR STAMPING CIGARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,565, dated April 16, 1895. Application tiled September 20,1894. Serial No. 523,589. (No model.)
.useful Improvements in Machines for Stamping Cigars; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others make and use the same.
Our invention has reference to a machine to stamp cigars by means of which the stamping is done by merely singeing the surface and not by countersinking the name or letters into the body of the cigar, and it does not in any way spoil the cigar even if it should be moderately dry, while the impression left is of a silver white color.
Referring to the drawings similar letters and numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure l is a front View. Fig.f 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a cross section of our machine, taken on the line Y, Y, in Fig. l. Fig. 4. is a section on line X X of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a section on lineZ Z of Fig. 6. Fig. 6 is a plan view of part of our machine showing our cigar holder in place.
Our machine is provided with a table A having the legs and sides and back a and a2.
Into the top c3 of the table `A is let in the casting B made as shown on the different views and .having a space b all around it, into which a circulation of cold water is kept up by means of the pipes h and b2, the one h being either connected with the water works system when there exists one, or with the bottom of the tank b3 when there are no water works, while the one b2 is connected with the sewer in the case of the pipe b being connected with the water works and with the top of the tank at h4 when a tank ha is used, the circulation in the latter case taking place the same as in a hot water system. On either side of this casting B are placed openings h5 communicating with pipes h6 which carry oif the carbonio acid gas to the chimney.
C is a gas pipe terminating by a suitable burner C on the Bunsen principle, while if' is a suitable drip attached to the return pipe bgso as to drain the whole apparatus of all the water it contains.
Into the top of the casting B is a rectangular opening he into which tits a iianged reducer b9, inside of which is then placed a piece of asbestos packing or other suitable non-conducting material blo so as to prevent the heat of the die holder Z711 communicating itself to the casting B, and also preventing the casting B from cooling the die D, and then inside of the asbestos b10 is placed our die holder b into which is loosely dropped the die D, having the shoulders d which prevent it falling through the opening in the die holder bu.
As can be seen the die D having the name or letters desired to be singed on the surface of the cigar raised on its upper end d is placed directly over the burner C', so that it is constantly kept ata high degree of temperature.
Now, to mark a cigar all that is necessary to do is to place it into our special holder E which consists in a piece of Wood'or any other snitable materialinto which is cut out the depression e which is made to exactly suit the size of cigarsbeing stamped. Ofcourse different holders will have to be used to suit the different sizes of cigars. Into the bottom of this depression e is cut out the slot e through which the die D passes up. On the under side of this holder E are placed two or more springs e2 so that when it is depressed, it retakes its normal position immediately when the downward pressure is removed, this holder E being let into the piece a4 secured to the top a3 of the table A as shown on the' several views.
vGr is a pedal or foot lever secured on a shaft g which is journaled in brackets 5 at the lower and back part of the machine. Rods g2 and g4 are connected together by a block g3, and the lower end of the rod g2 is pivotally connected to an arm g which is secured on the shaft g. A spring g5 is interposed between a collar 6 on the rod g2 and a stationary plate 7 supported by the table, and normally holds the lever Il in its raised position. However after having placed the cigar in the depression e on the holder E as shown at F in Figs. 3 and 4, the operator places his foot on the pedal G and thus pulls down the lever H hinged at h to the guide piece a4 through the IOC medium of the shaft g, lever g', articulated rod g2, pieces g3, and g4, this having for effect to press down on the cigar and consequently 0n the holder E and then bring the surface of the cigar in contact with the hot die D, when the name or letters desired to be singed on the surface of the cigar are immediately marked and by removing the foot from the,
pedal G the spring g5 immediately shoves the lever H up into the position shown on the drawings, and at the same time springs e2 shove up the holder E and consequently the cigar I from the surface of the die D. Of course itis merely necessary to just touch the die D and the operation is performed for if the cigar should be kept in contact with the die D for any length of time it would be burned as the die D is very hot.
To regulate the distance the lever II should descend We use the thumb screw J which is made to butt against the piece a4 at the required distance.
In changing the holder E for the different.
kinds of cigars it happens that the die D Vis not placed exactlyopposite the center of the aperture e', so that to secure this, we have provided the slides K, which are secu red to the table A and serve to support the casting B which is clamped in place by means of the screws K', so that the casting B and accessories such as the die D can be shoved either backward or forward of a sufficient distance to attain the object in View, and can then be firmly clamped.
The object of providing a circulation of Water in the space b is to keep the casting cool and prevent it burning the table H.
Ve might add here that the guide piece a4 is provided with four or more air holes e3 so that when the cigar holder is pressed down the air confined under it escapes and 'does not blow down along the die D' and interfere with the burner O. The springs e2 also prevent the lever H from crushing the cigar and otherwise injuring it.
Ot course the die D could be made to stamp a trade mark or any kind of mark whatever.
Having described our invention, what We claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
ll. In a machine for stamping cigars, the combination, with a stationary branding die, of a hollow castingB supporting the die, pipes forcirculating Water through the said casting,
non-heat-conducting material interposed between the said die and the casting, and aheating device arranged under the die, substantially as set forth.
2. In a machine for stamping cigars, the combination, with the stationary branding die, of a support B, a guide piece .above the support B and provided with the air escape holes e3, the cigar-holder E slidable vertically in the said guide piece, and springs normally holding the cigar holder in its raised position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
