TRIPOD STAND FOR ouNs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,364, dated August 13, 1895.
Application filed March 27, 1895. Serial No. 543,402. (No model.) Patented in France September 21, 1894, No. 241,573 {in B g September 22, 1894,1T-l11,977, and in Austria December 29, 1894, No. 45/470.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that We, HIRAM STEVENS MAXIM, mechanical engineer,a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bexley,
and LOUIS SILVERMAN, engineer, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Crayford, Kent, England, have invented an Improved Tripod Stand for Supporting a Gun, (for which we have obtained patents in France,
No. 241,573, hearing date September 21, 1894;
in Belgium,No. 111,977, bearing date September 22, 1894, and in Austria, No. 45/470, bearing date December 29, 1894,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had :5 to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved tripod stand for supporting a gun.
Figure 1 is a broken side elevation, partly in section, of the tripod stand, showing the mode of mounting the gun thereon. Fig. 2 is a broken front elevation of the stand. Fig. 3 is a plan of a part of the back leg and a detail hereinafter described. Fig. 4 is a view of a locking-lever detached, and Fig. 5 is a plan 2 5 of the saddle.
Like letters denote corresponding parts throughout the drawings.
The improved tripod stand or support is made of tubular metal. The back leg S is 0 made with a hinge S near its center, so that it can readily fold up into small compass. \Vhen the leg is extended, the two ends thereof butt squarely together at the hinge. The front legs T are furnished with projecting 5 lugs or fingers T at their upper ends, which bear against the forward end of the hind leg and take the pressure when the stand is extended. In lieu of the ordinary saddle heretofore used, we provide a saddle consisting 10 of a piece of leather U or other like material, connected to the back leg at one end at U and to a pillar U at the other end, which pillar can be erected when required for use by inserting the same in a hole or socket U in the back leg. When not in use, the said pillar is removed from its socket and the saddle can then be folded close and strapped against the leg.
The gun is carried at its front end by a fork W, having a socket W at its lower end, which fits upon a pin W fixed to the tripod.
The rear end of the gun is supported by an adjustable rod W which is pivoted-at its lower end to a bar V, that extends from the aforesaid socket W.
The tripod is provided with a locking device for securing the gun when-it has been pointed in the required direction. This locking device comprises a small sector V on the back leg, which sector engages with and sup- 6.0 ports a hook-shaped piece V secured to the end of the bar V. V is a lever pivoted to the piece V It has a cam-surface at V which engages with the sector V. By pressing upon or releasing the lever V the gunner can lock or release the gun, as required.
We are aware that it is not new to provide the legs of tripod stands with hinges, and do not claim this broadly.
What We claim is- 70,
' 1. A tripod stand having an extended back leg provided with a hinge to permit its being folded and two short front legs having projecting lugs or fingers T, adapted to bear against the forward end of the back leg, as set forth.
2. The combination with a tripod stand of a seat connected at one end to the back leg of the stand and at the other end to a pillar U the back leg having a socket at U to receive the said pillar, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the tripod stand of the sectorV on the back leg the hook shaped piece V which engages the sector and on which the gun rests, and the pivoted lever V having the cam face V substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands this 8th day of March, 1895.
HIRAM STEVENS MAXIM. LOUIS SILVERMAN.
