DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,863, dated August 6, 1895. Application filed April 18, 1895. Serial No. 546,223. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH T. HAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Door Stops and Locks, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete description, suflicient to enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, apply, and use the same.
This invention relates to the class of doorstops by means of which the door to which it is attached can be opened a short distance and will be there stopped and held by the de- Vice, so that entrance through the doorway is prevented; and the object of this invention is to obtain a sightly door-stop at small cost,
simple in construction, and well adapted to perform the functions required thereof, and which shall at the same time be adapted to be used as a door lock or bolt.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device embodying the invention attached to a door, with a small section of the door and door-jamb also in perspective and showing the door opened as far as possible with the device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a section of'a door and doorjamb and 0f the device embodying the invention attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the device embodying the invention and of a section of a door and doorjamb. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modification of one end of one of the elements of the device; and Fig. 5 is a modified construction of one of the elements of the device, whereby the device is made to properly fit a door and jamb wherein the door sets in beyond the door-jainb, not flush therewith.
A letter of reference applied to a given part is used to designate such part throughout the several figures of the drawings.
X is a door-jamb.
Y is a door.
A is a base secured to the door Y by suitable means-as, say, screws a a.
B is a projecting rib on base A, and b is a ball or knob on the end of rib B, projecting beyond base A. O is a button pivotally mounted on rib B.
D is a base secured to the door-jamb X, as by screws 0?! d d. E is a lever pivotally secured to the base D by pin or pivot e.
F is a slot in lever E.
f is the end of slot F adjacent to the pivotal end of lever E, and is of sufficient width to admit ball or knob 19 through the slot.
f f are beveled ribs serving as guides for the ball or knob b, insuring the extension of such ball or knob through the slot F when the device is used in opening the door.
e is the face of the lever E which comes adjacent to the face a of base A when the device is used as a lock or bolt, as is illus trated in Fig. 2.
G is a double-pronged hook pivotally secured to the free or swinging end of the lever E. Hook G is arranged to engage with the neck I) of ball or knob 17 when the door is to be locked in a partially-opened position by the device, as is well illustrated in Fig. 1.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 4 the loop or bail G is substituted for the hook G on the end of lever E.
It is apparent that by using either the double-pronged hook G or the loop or bail G, secured on the free end of the lever E and at the outer end of the slot therein, it will readily engage the neck of the ball or knob and can be employed on a door which opens to the right or left. I
In the modified construction illustrated in Fig. 5 the base A has thereon a rib of greater depth than in the construction illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. This deep rib is lettered B. The depth of this rib B prevents the face 6' of lever E coming in contact with the face a .of base A when the several parts are in a similar position to that illustrated in Fig. 2, and hence to use the device as a lock or bolt the projections B B are placed on the sides of the deep rib B. Asingle projection B is all that is absolutely essential for the purpose named-that is, to permit the face 6' to come in contact therewith when the several parts are in the position similar to that illustrated in Fig. 2--and hence in Fig. 5 I show but one of such projections. here two projections 13 B (as I prefer) are placed on the rib B, one thereof is on one side of the rib and one on the other side thereof.
The manner in which the device is to be used is readily understood from an inspection of the drawings.
When the door is to be opened to permit a person to pass through the doorway thereof, the lever is swung into the position illustrated ID in Figs. 3 and 5.
hen the device is to be used as a lock or bolt, the several parts are brought into the position illustrated in Fig. 2, and when the device is to be used to maintain the door in 15 a partially-opened position the button 0 is to 20 trated in Fig. 1. hen the door is to be locked in this opened position, the hook G is brought into engagement with the neck I) of ball or knob b, as is illustrated in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention and its method of operation, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a base-plate secured to the door and having a rib at a right angle thereto, provided with a projection on the side thereof about flush with the surface ofthe door-jamb, a ball or knob on said rib projecting beyond the base-plate, a pivotal lever having a longitudinal slot and secured to the jamb of a door in alignment with the rib on the base-plate, said slot adapted to receive at one end thereof the ball or knob, a button pivotally secured on the rib whereby when the but ton is extended through the slot and turned to an engaging position the face of the lever will be held in contact with the face of the projection on the side of the rib, substantially as described.
