Be it known that I, LORENZO STOWE, of Rome, in the county of Smith, State of Tennessee, have invented an Improved Back- Band Hook, of which the following is a specification.

-This invention is an improved back-band hook or trace-carrier for harness, the object being to provide a cheap and simple form of hook which can be readily attached to and detached from the harness and one which when properly adj usted or regulated will hold a trace-chain securely upon the hook.

Vith this and such other objects in View, as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists in a peculiar construction of the various parts and the novel combination and arrangement of the various parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed' out in the claims.

In the vdrawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a view showing my hook applied to a back-band. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the face-plate. Fig. 3 isa detail view of the rear plate, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the device attached to the back-band.

In carrying out my invention I employ a face-plate A, which is preferably circular in shape and skeleton in form, comprising the ring portion a and the cross-bar ai. This face-plate is constructed with an integral loop B and an integral hook C, located directly above the loop B. The cross-bar a is formed with anelongated opening D, the purpose of which will appear later on. The rear side and the face-plate is provided with a series of prongs E, which are adapted to enter the leather or canvas back-band and hold the face-plate in contact therewith; but in order to securely fasten said face-plate to the back-band I employ a back-plate F, which at its center is provided ,with forwardly-pro jecting shank G, carrying the peculiar-shaped head I'I, said head being adapted to pass through the elongated opening D in the crossbar a', and by turning the rear plate after the head has been so .passed through said opening the back and face plates are locked together and the head Gr is so shaped as to contact with the hook C, and thus lock the tracechain therein.

The back-plate is formed with openings II H upon opposite sides of the central shank, the purpose being to facilitate the manipulation of the parts by affording a good fingerhold.

Now in operation the face-plate is attached to the back-band by pressing the prongs therein, and as said back-band has been slotted to coincide with the opening D the head G can be readily passed through said back-band and through the face-plate, and then by turning the head down until it contacts with the hook C my improved back-band hook can be securely fastened to the band; and whenever it 'is desired to introduce a trace-chain or other hook orlink into the hook C the backplate is revolved a sufficient distance to carry the head away from the hook, and then after said chain has been attached thereto said back-plate is revolved to bring the head again opposite the hook C, thus locking the tracechain or other link securely upon the hook.'

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. In a backband hook, the combination with the face plate, having a hook within its outer edge, upon its forward face, and provided with means upon its rear face for connection with the backband, said face plate having an elongated'opening at its center, of a back plate having a forwardlyprojecting shank, and the head, carried by said shank, which head is adapted to be passed through the elongated opening of the face plate, and be turned into engagement with the hook of said face plate, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a backband hook, the combination with a face plate, skeleton in form, and comprising an outer rim and the central crossbar, said cross bar having an elongated opening formed therein, a hook formed upon the outer rim, the rear face of said face plate being provided with a series of prongs, ofthe back plate having a forwardly projecting shank having a head adapted to pass through the elongated opening in the face plate, and to be turned opposite the hook carried by said plate, the back plate having openings therein, to facilitate the manipulation of said plate, substantially as shown and described.
