HENRY n. w. sinvnns, oF CHEYENNE, wYoMiNe.
v COOKING .STOVE OR RANGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,454, dated July 23, 1895. Application led February 27, 1895. Serial No. 539,856. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that 1, HENRY F. W. SIEvERs,
a citizen of the United States of America, re-
` to the accompanying drawings, and to the iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cooking stoves or ranges, and my object is to provide an attachment for the door of the bake-oven which shall permit the inspection of the articles therein during the process of baking without allowing the escape of heat or reducing the normal temperature of the oven.
The necessity of opening the door of the oven to ascertain the condition of the baking articles often results in such sudden reduction of temperature as to cause the Y articles to t`all,7 thus rendering proper baking impossible.
The invention consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective lView of a stove provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is an inside view of the main door detached, the auxiliary door being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line a: so, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 isa perspective view of the inner-guard plate.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate the main door having openings 6 covered on the inside by a sheet of mica or isinglass 7, or other transparent or semi-transparent material capable of resisting the action of the heat. This sheet of material is large enough to overlap the door adjacent the openings, and is further sup- 4ing the openings.
ported from the outside by the ribs 8 separat- The sheet is held in position from the inside by a frame 9 having openings corresponding with the openings 6 in the door. Thisframe is preferably composed ot' metal, andl is secured in place by means of screwsvor other suitable fastening devices.
The openings 6 of the main door 5 are concealed by an auxiliary door lOhinged to the main door. This auxiliary door may be opened at pleasure for the purpose of inspecting the articles in the oven. 'When closed, it may be held in place by any suitable temporary locking device.
Vhen it is not desired to look throughV the apertures 6 in the main door, as when roasting meat, the transparent plate 7 may be shielded by a guard-plate 12 composed of thin sheet metal having sutticient spring or flexibility to permit itsbeing inserted and removed atwill. This shield is retained in ways 13 formed in elongated projections 14 cast integral with the door 5. This shield guards the. transparent plate from the spattering of the juices attending the cooking ot meats or other articles which do not require the equable oven temperature necessary in baking. i
Having thus described my invention, what l claim. isp The combination of the main oven door having an opening 6 and provided with projections 14 having ways 18, a transparent, or` semi-transparent, plate adapted to resist the action of lthe heat, said plate being placed over the opening in the door, a frame 9 attached to the door and adapted to hold the plate 7 in place, an au-xiliary door hinged to the main door and adapted to protect the transparent plate from the outside, and a flexible, readily removable guard-plate or shield 12 engaging the ways 13 of the "door 5 and adapted to protect the plate 7 from the inside, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof in the presence ot two witnesses. HENRY F. W. SIEVERS.
Witnesses: p
