2 Claims. (Cl. 126-299) This invention relates to oven door cover means and more particularly to means for covering an oven door when it is open for broiling in order to prevent grease and soot from rising and soiling walls and ceiling.

One of the problems with broiling in an indoor oven, especially in a wall type oven, is the fact that the oven door must be left open for proper broiling. The door is generally left open about 3 to 4 inches at the top with the result that flames, smoke, soot and grease may rise from the open door and deposit themselves on walls, ceiling, furniture, etc. In a stove type oven with burner on top the cook is liable to extend his or her arm over the open door and receive the benefit of some of the grease, heat or flame from the open door.

The present invention solves these difiiculties by providing a cover which is adapted to extend across the top of the opening of the open door. This permits the required ventilation through the side openings but prevents direct rising of the flames, smoke, soot and grease onto the walls and ceilings. When the broiling operation is over the cover is easily removable for cleaning in the same manner as a pot cover. The cover also prevents spillage or grease from pots on top of a stove from falling into the oven.

Accordingly, a principal object of the invention is to provide new and improved oven door cover means.

Another object of the invention is to provide new and improved means to protect walls and ceiling from grease and soot when an oven door is open to broiling position.

Another object of the invention is to provide new and improved protective oven door cover means permitting ventilation when broiling but preventing flames, soot, grease, and smoke from rising up from the open door.

These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following specifications and drawings, of which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention, Fig. 2 is a front view, partly cut away, of an embodiment of the invention mounted on an oven and Fig. 3 is a side view of Fig. 2, partly in section.

Referring to the figures the invention comprises a substantially flat member 1 which may be of any suitable metal such as stainless steel, copper or aluminum. An insulated handle 2 is attached to the center portion thereof, a pair of front tabs 3 and '4 are provided at the front corners and a pair of rear tabs 5 and 6 are provided at the rear corners. Fig. 3 shows the side view of an oven 7 partially in section. The oven has a door 8 which is hinged to the oven at the bottom by the hinge 9. The oven has a heating element 10 and a platform or shelf '11 resting on supports 16, 17 for placing articles to be broiled. The doors on conventional ovens have a detented open position for broiling slightly smaller than illustrated in Fig. 3. In this position the spring loaded door remains open leaving an opening about 4 or 5 inches at the top. This opening is to lower oven temperature and to provide ventilation during the broiling operation so that the meat will not become steamed. The cover 1 is adapted to fit on top of the door 8 with the front tabs 3 and 4 resting on the inside of the door and tab 14 gripping the outside 2,984,236 iatented May 16, 1961 of the door and the rear tabs 5 and 6 and 15 resting against the side walls or the top wall of the oven. The dimension between the tabs 3 and 6 is chosen to be slightly more than the normal broiler position of the door so that there will be some spring pressure in the door holding the cover 1 in place, even without tab 14.

Various other methods of holding the cover in place may be used, for instance, additional front tabs may be used to hook over the front of the door or the cover may be hinge connected to the oven or to the door, or brackets on the oven and door may be provided to receive the tabs. It is preferable to have the cover easily removable so that the accumulated grease and soot may be easily washed off. The cover may be conveniently stored with the pots or pot covers. The member 1 preferably overhangs the sides of the door as shown by the extending portion 12 (Fig. 2).

Many modifications may be made by those desirous of practicing the invention without departing from the scope thereof which is defined by the following claims:

I claim:

1. In an oven of the type having a door hinged at the bottom and having a broiling position for said door, external removable cover means for said oven door when said door is partially open to broiling position comprising a substantially fiat rectangular member the length of said member being substantially equal to the width of the oven door and the width of said member being larger than the opening of said door when in broiling position, an insulated handle connected to the center of said member, a first pair of downwardly extending tabs at the front corners of said member, said tabs being adapted to engage the inside of said door, a second pair of upwardly extending tabs at the rear corners of said member, said tabs being adapted to engage the walls of said oven, and third tab means extending downwardly from said member between said first pair of tabs whereby said member is supported horizontally on said opened door and holds said door open a predetermined amount.

2. In an oven of the type having a door hinged at the bottom and having a partially opened broiling position for said door; external removable cover means for said door when said door is partially open to said broiling position comprising a substantially flat member, the front length of said member being greater than the inside width of said oven, the rear length of said member being less than the inside width of said oven, the sides of said member being equal to each other and slightly greater than the opening of said door when in said broiling position, an insulated handle connected to said member, and means to removably connect said member to said door when open in said broiling position comprising a first pair of downwardly extending tabs at the front corners of said member, said tabs being adapted to engage said door, and a second pair of upwardly extending tabs at the rear corners of said member, said tabs being adapted to engage the side walls of said oven whereby said member is supported in substantially horizontal position, and extends slightly into said oven.
