UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
ATo a/ZZ whom, it may concern'.-
ANTON IIULMAN, OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
SHUTTER-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 543,247, dated July 23, 1895. i
` Application led January 5, 1895. Serial No. 533,919. (No model.)
Be it known that I, ANTON HULMAN, of Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have' invented a new and Improved Shutter-Fastener, of which the following` is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in shutter-fasteners; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which will be exceedingly simple, durable, and economic in its construction Aand capable of a convenient application to a shutter, acting to effecu tually holdthe shutter in an openposition,
the fastener being also so constructed that it will not interfere with properly closing the shutter.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination ofthe several parts, asV will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar gures and'letters of refer-- one shutter being in a position admitting of v the shutter being closed, while the device of the other shutter is illustrated in position to maintain the shutter in an open position;
and Fig. 2 is a vertical section through a portion of the shutter and likewise a section -The locking-arm A does not rest directly upon the shutter, but is spaced a certain distance therefrom, as shown in Fig. 2, in which it will be observed that the pivot-pin 10 is provided with a collar 11, either integral therewith or attached thereto, the said collar serving to space the locking-arm from the shutter, and this pivot-pin is provided with lock-nuts 12 and 13 at its ends, one of said nuts .having bearin g against the outer face of the shutter, the other nut havingbearing against the inner face of' the locking-arm.
When the device is not in use the lockingarm is carried to the upper substantially vertical position and is permitted to rest upon the keeper B, which is provided at its upper end with a head. When the shutter is to be held open the locking-arm is vcarried down- `ward and its longer end is held to engage with 'It win be understood that if in'praeuceit is found desirable the device may be attached tothe window-frame and made to temporarily engage with the shutter.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A shutter-fastener, comprising an arm pivoted at one side of its center to a shutter near its hinged edge, and a stop on the shutter beyond the pivot of the said arm and with which stop the shorter member of ,the arm engages to hold the longer arm in contact with a window-sill, substantially7 as described.
2. A shutter-fastener, comprising an arm pivoted near one end to a shutter near its hinged edge, and a beveled and headed stop secured to the shutter beyond the pivot of the arm and against and under the head of which the shorter member of the arm rests to hold the longer member in contact with a windowsill, substantially as described.
3.' The combination, with a shutter, of a shutter-fastener, the same consisting of a bolt secured to the shutter and provided with a
