Description

(No ModleL) C. E. MOREHO-USE.
I TEMPORARY BINDER. No. 543,101.
Patented'July 23, 1895.
UMT ST TES PATENT QFFICE CYRUS E. MOREHOUSE, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE MOREHOUSE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
$PEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,101, dated July 23, 1895.
Application filed December 8,1894. Serial No. 531,199- (No model.)
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CYRUS E. MOREI-IOUSE,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented cer-' tain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in certain peculiarities of constructionand combination of parts whereby I provide a simple, economical, and efficient means for adjustable and detachable connection of the clamping-strips or coversections embodied in a temporary binder, the same being hereinafter specified with refer ence to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a sectional view taken on line 1 l of the succeeding figure and illustrates my improvements in connection with cover-sections of a temporary binder; 'Fig. 2, a transverse section taken on line 2 2 of the preceding figure; Figs; 3 and 4, horizontal sections respectively taken on lines 3 3 and4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 a detail perspective view of a portion of a rightangle metal plate constituting the preferred back-section of each cover in said binder.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents the top and B the under cover of a temporary binder, each of these covers being provided with a flexible joint I) to permit of their beinglaid back in the ordinary manner. The rear section of each cover is preferably ofright-angle contour and the inwardly-extending flanges c d, resulting from this formation, overlap each other to form a stiff back for the binder. Sheet metal is the preferred material for the right-angle back-sections of the binder; but it is within the scope of the present invention to omit the overlapping flanges c d or to utilize stiff material other than sheet metal for said back-sections. It is also within the scope of the present invention to omit the forward cover-sections; but as essential elements of my invention I must employ clamping-strips cf and provide the same with rack-stems C D, that are held in engagement with each other by means of slidebands E, these rack-stems being adjustable on each other to vary the distance between said clamping-strips.
In order that the rack-stems may be swung in out of the way when the binder is collapsed, I provide them with trunnions g, and the bearings for these trunnions may be formed by the bending of integral cars it at the ends of the clamping-strips ef, or they may be separately formed and attached to said strips by any suitable means.
The rack-stems C D are preferably halfround, their teeth being upon the flat inner sides, and it is also preferable to provide the stems C with less teeth than the onesD, as herein shown. However, these are mere matters of detail not afiecting the scope or operation of my invention. By having the inner ends of the rack-stems C slightly flaring the slide-bands E will wedge in place, and thereby insure a lock of the clampingstrips or binder-covers in their adjustment to vary the intervening space. Upset in the clampingstrip e I show stems G, that engage hollow posts likewise connected to the clamping-strip f, these posts being for engagement with suitable openings in the contents I of the binder.
While I have shown the stems and posts, I do not make any claim for the same, except as parts of a temporary binder embodying the above-described means for the adjustable and detachable connection of the clampingstrips or rear cover-sections. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A temporary-binder comprising a pair of clamping-strips, rack-stems connected to the clamping-strips, and slide-bands that serve to maintain the rack-stems of one of said strips in engagement with those of the other.
2. A temporary-binder comprising a pair of clamping-strips provided with bearings, rackstems trunnioned in the bearings, and slidebands that serve to maintain the rack-stems of one of the strips in engagement with those connected to the clamping-strips, and slidebands that serve to maintain the rack-stems :5
of one of said strips in engagement with those of the other.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in
the county of Milwaukee and State of Wis- 20 consin, in the presence of two witnesses.
CYRUS E. MOREHOUSE.
