UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH F. RICHARDSON, OF BIRKS CITY, KENTUCKY.
ROCKING CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,659, dated July 16, 1895.
Application filed August 8, 1894:.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. RICHARD- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birks City, in the county of Daviess and State Further objects and advantages of this in vention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In' the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a churn constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the cover and transparent slide detached.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 desigates a base-board provided at its extremities with notches 2 for the reception of upwardly-extending ears on the rockers 3.
which the ears are formed upon the rockers, receive the reduced portions of the base-board 1, and thereby form a rigid connection between the parts. Stiffness is added to the structure by the transverse brace 5, which connects the rockers.
Rising from the base-board at its extremities are the side boards 7 and 11, and between said side boards at an intermediate 'point of the base-board is arranged the partition-board 10. The space between the partition-board 10 and the side board 11 forms a seat for the churn-body 9, said body resting upon a sheetmetal plate 8, which is arranged upon the base-board and extends-in front and in rear thereof to form a rest ofv the desired extent for the churn-body.
Connecting the rear edges of the side board 7 and partition-board 10 is a seat-back 6 to support the back of 'the operator when seated Serial No. 519,754. (No model.)
upon the base-board in the interval between said side board 7 antl'partition-board 10..
The churn-body is provided at one end with an outlet 13,. having a stopper 14 attached to a retaining cord or chain 15, and an opening 16 in the upper side of the churn-body is fitted with a closure, including a hinged cover of opaque material and aslide removably attached to the churn-body and adapted to close the opening without interfering with a view of the contents. Around said opening 16 in the top of the churn-body'is arranged a channeled guide 17, and a transparent slide 18 is provided at its edges with a metallic frame 19, which prevents the chipping or breaking of the edges of the slide and forms suitable surfaces for contact with the guide. A finger-ring 20 is attached to the outer side frame 19 to facilitate the removal of the slide.
,Hinged to therear side of the channeled guide 17 is an opaque, preferably metallic, cover 21, the hinges 22 of which have their pivotal points in a plane above the upper su rface of the channeled guide, whereby the cover may be thrown back and occupy a position in a plane parallel with the upper surface of the churn-body to allow the operator, while seated upon the base-board, to view the operation of churning through the transparent slide. is an agitating-web 23 to obstruct the passage of the contents from one end of the churnbody to the other.
From the above description it will be seen that the churn embodying my invention is adapted to. be operated by a person seated upon the base-board between the upright boards 7 and 10, and the rocking of the apparatus causes the contents of the churn-body to be thrown violently from one end thereof to the other, the length of the churn-bod y being parallel with the planes of the rockers andthe upper side thereof being in such a plane as to allow the operator to view the contents without leaving the seat.
The churn-body is held from longitudinal movement and displacement by means of transverse cleats 12 connecting the upper edges of the sideand partition-boards 11 and 10, respectively, in advance ofthe front side Arranged within the churn-bodyand in rear of the rear side of the channeled guide. The front and rear sides of the chan neled guide are arranged at a less interval than the front and rear .edges of the boards 10and 11, whereby the cleats 12 may be secured to said upper edges of the boards and bear against the front and rear sides of the channeled guide, and hence lock the churn-body in place.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages'of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- In a churn, the combination of atransverse seat-board provided at its extremities with rockers and constructed at one end to form a seat, parallel boards rising from the baseboard at an interval to form a seat for a churn body,'a churn body arranged in the interval between said vertical boards and elongated parallel with the planes of the rockers, said churn body being provided at its upper side with an opening, a channeled guide extendigg around three sides of said opening and open at its outer side, a transparentslide fitted at its edges in-said -guide, an opaque cover hinged to the rear side of the guide with the axis of its hinges above the plane of the guide, whereby said cover is adapted to fold parallel with the top of the churn body, and cleats connecting the ppper edges of the vertical boards, respectively, in front and in rear of and in contact with the front and rear sides of the channeled guide and extending over the contiguous portions of the churn body, whereby said body is held from longitudinal movement and displacement, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim theforegoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH F. RICHARDSON. Witnesses: I
G. TROTTER TYLER, JOHN W. CARTER.
