SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,737, dated September 12, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD D. MOON, a citizen of the United'States, residing at Ovilla, in the countyof Ellis and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ohurns, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in churns.
re The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of churns, to effect a rapid production of butter, and to enable the churn body or receptacle to be readily detached and removed after the operation of i5 churning is completed.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings-Figure l is a perspective view of a churn constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.

1l designate vertical bracket bars, designed to be secured to a wall or other suitable support and arranged parallel with each other, and supporting an upper rigid horizontal shelf 2 and a lower hinged shelf 8, which is connected at its outer end with the rigid shelf by a locking bar a. The upper shelf 2 5 has its inner end reduced and fitted between the vertical bars 1, and the shoulders at the sides of the reduced portion are arranged in recesses 5 of the bracket bars 1. The bracket bars are connected by a horizontal cross-piece 6, which is arranged beneath the shelf 2, and
is located in the recess 5; and the shelf is supported by knees 7, arranged beneath the shelf and secured to the same and the outer face of the horizontal cross-bar. The lower shelf 5 3 has its inner end reduced, and hinged by a horizontal pintle 8 to the lower ends of the bracket bars 3 and its upper face is provided with a circular recess 9 forming a seat for a churn body or vessel 10 to prevent the latter shifting its position on the lower shelf. The churn body or vessel 10 is arranged upon the horizontal shelf with its cars 11 located at opposite sides of the upper shelf; and these cars would prevent the body or vessel moving any distance laterally. The locking bar 4 is pro- 5 vided at its lower end with a perforation, and
is hinged to an eye or staple 12 of the outer end of the lower shelf; and its upper end is bent inward at right angles to form a jaw 13, which is provided with a threaded opening, and which receives a clamping screw 14 for engaging a depression or concavity 15 of a metal plate 16 set in the upper face of the shelf 2. A nut 17 is arranged on the lower face of the jaw of the locking bar to increase the thickness of the same. The metal plate 16 is provided at its center with a bearing opening, in which is journaled a dasher-shaft 18 carryingadasher 19 and a sleeve 20, which is fitted on the lower portion of the dasher 7o shaft and carries an outer dasher 21. Pinions 22 and 23 are secured respectively at the upper end of the dasher shaft, and the top of the sleeve, and they mesh with a master-wheel 24. The master wheel 24 is mounted on a shaft 25, which is journaled in a suitable hearing of an L-shaped support 26, which is mounted on the upper shelf, and which rises from the plate 16 at one side thereof. The upper end of the dashenshaft is detachably jour- 8o naled in the top or arm of the L-shapcd support 26; and a crank'handle is secured to the shaft 25. The dashers are inverted U shaped, and by rotating the master-wheel they are oppositely rotated, and their particular shape 8 5 enables them to rotate past each other. The dashers serve to rapidly agitate the cream, and to hold the same at the bottom of the churn body or receptacle, and they efiect a rapid production of butter.
It will be seen that the churn is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that a milk pail may be readily employed as a churn body, and that the churn body or receptacle may be readily detached after the 5 operation of churning is completed.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is 1. In a churn, the combination with a support, of an upper rigid horizontal shelf, a lower downwardly swinging or opening shelf hinged to the support and arranged beneath the rigid shelf and detachably connected therewith, a churn body receptacle mounted on the hinged shelf and arranged beneath the rigid shelf, a dasher suspended from the rigid upper shelf and arranged within the churn body receptacle, and operating mechanism mounted on the upper shelf for actuating the churn dasher, substantially as described.
2. In a churn, the combination with a support, of a horizontal shelf rigidly attached thereto, a hinged shelf arranged beneath the rigid shelf, alocking bar hingedly connected at itslower end to thehinged shelf and provided. at its upper end with a clamping-screw for engaging the rigid shelf detachably, a churn bodyreceptacle mounted on the hinged shelf, and adasher and operating mechanism able support, an upper rigid shelf secured to the bracket bars, a lower shelf hingedly connected at its inner end to them, a churn body supported on the hinged shelf, a plate arranged on the upper shelf and provided with a depression, a locking bar hingedly connected with the lower shelf and having its upper end bent at an angle and provided with a threaded opening, a clamping screw arranged in the threaded opening for engaging the depression, and a dasher and operating mechanism mounted on the upper shelf, substantially as described.
