J. E. WALSH. ADJUSTABLE PORTABLE FRAME.
No. 542,297. Patented July 9, 1895.
Wiidesses Wail 9 U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. WALSH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO MARY A. lYALSH,
- OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE PORTABLE FRAME.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 542,297, dated July 9, 1895. Application filed September 10, 1894. Serial No. 522,587- (No model.)
' fication.
My invention relates to improvements in portable frames, and more particularly to those employed on board of canal-boats or sea-going vessels for the support of a weighing-machine, such as are used by stevedores in loading and unloading vessels; and my invention consists in the combination of parts hereinafter described, and then particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my portable frame adjusted over the hatch of a canal-boat and regulated in'such a manner as to dis charge from a hopper of a weighing-machine into a port-hole of a steamship, a portable steam-crane on the other side of the canalbo'at feeding the freight into the hopper of the weighing-machine. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the portable frame mounted upon a canal-boat. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the portable frame.
The upper sliding part of the frameO consists, preferably, of four pieces, two 0' c forming the side guides running parallel to the slide-rails a a, secured to one side A of the main frame, and two cross-rails o 0 running at right angles to and over the side guides 0, one at each end, and overlapping the latter at both sides, the overlapping 'ends resting upon the rails a, the entire frame C being free to slide sidewise upon the rails a. At their crossings the rails c and c' are secured to each other by means of screws or bolts or in any other suitable manner.
The main frame consists of two side trusses A and B, resting, preferably, on rollers 12 To the top of the truss A, and projecting therefrom at right angles, are secured two parallel rails a a. The top of the truss B is provided with two slots 19 b, which engage and securely guide the rails 00 a, supporting them in a horizontal position when the rails a a. are inserted into said slots.
The rollers r are secured at the bottom of the frame in such a position as to allow a motion of the entire frame in a direction at right angles to the direction of the rails or, a, thus enabling the stevedore to shift the weighing-machine W, placed upon the traveling frame 0, from one end of the vessel to another, and also across its entire width, if it should be desired, and to combine the weighing and trimming operation by gradually shifting the entire frame from one end of a vessel to the other andthe cross-frame 0 alternately from one side to the other when loading from a larger vessel into a canal-boat.
The rails or a are made of sufficient length to enable the erection of the portable frame over the largest hatches found upon vessels, and the distance between the trusses A and B can be increased or diminished to suit the requirements of each case by sliding the rails a a more or less through the slots 1) b in the truss B. The motion of the traveling frame 0 may be facilitated by placing rollers under each corner traveling upon the rails a a.
The distance between A and B having been determined in a particular case they can be secured in such a relative position by means of ropes and the like;
By moving the frame 0 to an extreme end and projecting the spout of the weighing-machine hopper over the end the load can be discharged from a canal; boat through the port-hole of a large vessel, as shown in Fig. 1,
while in other cases it may be thrown sidewise over the rails a a or through the opening between the rails a a. It is apparent that in employing this frame a great saving of time and work must result in comparison withv cases where stationary frames are employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an adjustable portable frame, the combination of the truss A- having the horizontal rails a a, the truss B supporting one end of the truss A'and adjustable on said rails, and
the frame 0 movable on said rails a, substantially as described.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 8th day of.
September, A. D. 1894.
