Description

G. H. RUSSELL.
- NECKTIB PASTE'NER. No. 542,031.
Patented July 2; 1895.
nu Hill UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. RUSSELL, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
NECKTlE-FAST ENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,031, dated duly 2, 1895. Application filed March 11, 1895. Serial No. 541,253- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, and aresidentof Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the follow; ing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to devices for preventing neckties from rising up on standing collars; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction as will be fully set forth hereinafter and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a representation of my device in use. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved device.
The object of my invention is to provide a detachable device designed to be used with a necktie or band tied by hand, so that after such a tie hasbeen tied around a standing collar on the wearer the device can be adjusted to prevent the tie from rising, andalso, when the tie has been worn, to remove the device therefrom for use upon a fresh tie.
Referring to the drawings, my device is shown in perspective in Fig. 3, and is formed of a single strip of wire, preferably silver wire, bent into the required shape and sharpened into points at the ends thereof, comprising two straight portions a a, bent at the ends to form hooks b b, terminating in sharp points a c, the lower ends of the partsa a being rounded, as at d d, and thence extending upward by the converging portions e e, united at the top by the loopf, rising to a plane above the tops of the hooks Z) Z).
In Figs. 1 and 2 I illustrate the manner of using my improved device. A represents a straight standing collar, and B a straight dress-tie, of lawn, silk, or any other suitable material. After the bow has been formed by hand the points a c of my device are inserted through the tie B, close to the bow just tied, at the proper height above the bottom line thereof, so that when my device is pulled downward the bottom of said tie will rest just above the bends d d of the device between the parts a a and e e. Then the tie is pulled downward until the loop f is below the adjacent bottom edge of the collar A and pushed back of said collar between it and the neckband of the shirt 0, when the tie is pushed smoothly up to place again, with both tie and collar between the converging parts a a and e e of said device.
To remove the device, it is only necessary to crowd any thin object, such as a knife-blade, pin, or the thumb-nail, between the tie and the hooks b b and press downward until below the points 0 0, when the device can be instantly removed ready for use upon a fresh tie.
In using my device it should not be placed upon the tie until after the same has been partly tied by hand, as it is desirable to place it as closely as possible to the bow, so that the latter, when straightened out, will conceal it from view, and therefore it is not adapted for use upon ready-made bows or cravats, but is a most convenient and desirable article for use upon dress-ties and those wherein the bow is made by hand, and will effectually prevent the objectionable rising of such ties upon straight standing collars.
By reason of the loop f rising from'theconverging arms e e above the plane of the tops of the hooks b b the collar and tie, when the device is adjusted, are crowded between the converging straight portions of the device and firmly wedged in place with the said hooks between the upright pairs of arms e e and a a, and all danger of accidental detachment is therebyobviated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A detachable neck-tie fastener, comprising a single strip ofwire bent to form vertical straight portions having downward projecting sharp pointed hooks at the upper ends thereof parallel therewith and upward diverging portions united by a loop, rising to a plane above the tops of the said hooks, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wiscousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE I-I. RUSSELL. Witnesses:
H. G. UNDERwooD, HENRY DANKERT.
