. IMPROVED BROOM-HEAD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,200, dated April 24, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PARSONS, of the city of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Broom-Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view, in elevation, of my broomhead with a portion of the-corn. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical'sect-ion through the center of the same and Figs. 3 andetare edge and top views of the jaws of the clamp for holding the corn in the head.
It is the object of my invention to form the broom-head so that the corn can be easily and properly placed or removed, and that the handle and corn can be effectually clamped by a single screw-bolt; and to this end my invenlion consists in forming a broom-head of thin sheet metal, strengthened by a cap on its top, through which the handle is inserted, and securing the corn in place by clamps on the opposite sides of the head, so arranged that one edge of the clamps shall rest upon the lower edge of the metallic head and the other edges of the clamp shall rest ,on the corn with which the head is filled, while the clamps and handle and the corn are securely held in place by a single screw-bolt.

Two clamps, E and F,'so constructed that their upper edges shall fit neatly on the lower edge of the metal head, while their lower edges shall press more deeply than the head upon into the center of one jaw of the clamp,
the corn, are placed on the lower edge of the metal head, and are held together by a single screw-bolt, Gr, which also passes through the handle, this bolt having a square head recesses carrying a nut on the other end that rests upon the'opposite jaw of the clamp, and thus the clamp will be drawn together as the nut is tightened on the bolt. The lower edge of the jaws of the clamp are parallel and exactly opposite to each other, but rest upon the corn,
and these edges being longer than their upper ones the corn will be pressed tight and held securely.
When the head is filled with corn, the handle inserted, the j aws ofthe clamp properly placed, and the bolt put through them with its not on its screw end, the tightening of the nut will compress the lower edges of the jaws of the clamp tightly upon the corn, and thus the single bolt will keep the handle in place, press the metal edges of the head firmly, and seeurely hold the corn; while to remove worn com and refill the head it is only required to loosen a single nut, that can be instantly retightened when the head is refilled.
lt is obvious that my invention is both perfectly efiicient and that the changing of the filling can be effected with the utmost economy of time and labor.
\Vhat l olaimas my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
vThe combination of a sheet-metal head with a metallic clamp constructed substantially as described, when both are so arranged that the lower edge of the jaws of the clamp rests on the corn, and the upper edge of the clamp rests on the lower edge of the metal head, and the handle and corn will be held in place by a single screw -bolt, operating substantially as set forth.
