Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEANDER M. MOTT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF LUBRlCATlNG-OIL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,192, dated April 24, 1866.
To all whom 'it mag concern.-
Be it known that I, LEANDER M. MOTT, a loyal citizen of the United States, of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, one of the representatives of Samuel M. Mott, deceased, and now a part owner of the Letters Patent granted said Samuel M. Mott, deceased, bearing date July 23. 1861, for preparing lubricating-oil from crude rock or mineral oil by means oi'chemicals and steam, have invented or discovered a new Process in the application of the chemicals and the deodorizing of the oil; and I hereby declare the following is a full description thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in, first, reducing the oil by evaporation caused by applying steam or heat directly to the boiler containing the oil and heating the same until I obtain the desired gravity, after which I place in the oil the following-named ingredients or chemicals: To each gallon of oil to be treated I add five ounces of common salt, five ounces of unslaked lime,'one and one-fourth ounce of saltpeter, three-fourths of an ounce of potash, and boil all together until a proper consistency is obtained and the oil is thoroughly deodorized.
The placing of these chemicals in direct contact with the oil gives to it a proper consistency and removes the impurities, thus producing a good deodorized lubricating-oil.
In the schedule of the patent granted to Samuel M. Mott, deceased, the oil was placed in a tank or receiver, and the chemicals were placed in a tight boiler containing water and subjecting the same to a violent heat, the steam passing from the water-boiler into the oil by means of a pipe inserted in the top of the boiler and connecting with the receiver containing the oil.
By my process I place the oil in the boiler and subject it to a gradual heat of from two to three hours" duration, according to the quantity of oil to be treated. I then place the before-mentioned chemicals into the oil and boil altogether until done. I
This method is a saving of the oil; besides it enables me to deodorize more eifectually than by the original method. By the original method the water-and chemicals combined, when heated and thrown into the oil in form of jetor steam, caused so much agitation that a portion of the oil was carried 011' with the benzole and lost, whereas by my process the agitation is much slower and the oil is saved.
I do not claim that there may not be other modes of treatment similar in some respects to the one set forth, producing similar results 5 but What I do claim isp The preparing of crude rock or mineral oil for lubricating purpose and the deodorizing of crude rock or mineral oil by means of the application of the before-mentioned chemicals directly to the oil and subjecting the same to heat, as is substantially set forth above.
LEANDER M. MOTT.
