H. T. RICHMOND.
' GURRYGOMB.
No. 541,883. Patented July 2, 1895.
an STATES PATENT .FFrc.
HENRY T. RICHMOND, OF MALVERN, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS TO WILLIAM M. EVANS, T. D. GIBSON, AND J. P. MUNGER, OF SAME PLACE.
CURRYCOMB.
SEEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,883, dated July 2, 1895. Application filed October 6, 1894. Serial No. 525,150. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. RICHMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malvern, in the county of Mills and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Currycombs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to curry combs, and among the objects in view is to provide a curry comb which is adapted to quickly and thoroughly remove all loose hair and dirt from the skin of animals Without irritating or injuring the skin.
A further object is to provide a curry comb of simple, inexpensive and durable construction, and with the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the curry comb looking from the under side thereof. Fig. 2 is an edge or end view. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but at right angles thereto.
I would state that the primary feature of my invention resides in the novel formation or construction of the teeth of the comb, while a secondary feature resides in the construction of the back of the comb to which the teeth are secured. V
In the formationof the teeth of my'curry comb, I employ a metallic plate or section 1, which is preferably sheet iron and slitted toward opposite sides as at 2, forming a series of independent teeth or sections 3, which latter are bent up at right angles to the body of the plate. The upper or operative edges 4 of the teeth are made rounded or somewhat of a semi-circular shape, which shape I have found is Well adapted for removing all loose hair and dirt, while at the same time preventing any irritation of or injury to the skin. To render the teeth still more effective, I give each of them a slight twist or bend so as to separate and pointed out in the them to a slightextent and at the same time adapt them to spring or yield when in the act of currying the animal.
The number of teeth formed on the plate 1 may of course be varied and a greater or less degree of twist may be given said teeth if desired.
The back to which the plate 1 is to be secured may be a rigid one as is usually employed, though I prefer a flexible or elastic back 5, which I preferably construct of some yielding or elastic material as rubber or leather and the plate 1 may be secured to the back in any suitable manner as by rivets G.
In practice I employ three plates 1 secured to the back of the curry comb, each of said plates being constructed with the teeth hereinbefore described. A variable number of such plates may however be employed, as desired.
By constructing the back of a flexible material, the same affords a yielding support for the teeth and renders the action of the latter still further beneficial and advantageous.
The back is provided with the usual strap 7 forming a loop for the passage of the hand. when grasping the curry comb.
The advantages to be derived by the use of my invention will be appreciated by all ac quainted with this class of devices.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a curry-comb, the combination with a back of U shaped plates 1 having a series of vertical slits or kerfs 2 extending from the upper edges of the sides of the plates to a point near the lower ends of said sides whereby a series of independent spring or yielding teeth are formed, said teeth having rounded operating edges 4 as described, and each of said teeth 0 being twisted whereby their adjacent edges are separated, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY T. RICHMOND.
