RUG-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,703, dated June 25, 1895.

Bet it known that 1, WILLIAM H. VAN DER- VOORT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohampaign, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Rug-Holder, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in holders for rugs, and has for its object a device which may be adjusted to any sized rug, attached thereto by simple means, its purpose being to hold the rug flat upon the floor. I attain this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my device. Fig. 2 is a side View of one of the bars. Fig. 3 is a plan view of my device with the sliding portion of the arms retracted.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

My device consists of a plurality of arms A, A, pivoted as at a. In the drawings I have shown but two of such arms butI do not wishto confine myself to any particular number.

The arms A, A, have in their outward ends slots A, A, through which pass the studs b, b of the bars B, B, for one at least of which, as b, I desire to have a screw stud for the purposes hereinafter explained.

The bars B, B, have at their outer ends the perforations b 19 which may be made in any desired number or any desired size or arrangement. To the under sides of the bars B, B, are fastened strips of felt or other cushioning material C, O, which I preferably cement to thebars B, B although the same result may,

be obtained by sewing, riveting, or in any other manner well known in the art.

The bars B, B, and arms A, A, are preferably made of strip steel or some other resilient material.

The manner of using my device is as follows: The screw studs I) being loosened, the bars B, B, are adjusted evenly to the length of the diagonal of the mat or rug to which it is desired to attach my device, care being taken that the arms A, A are turned on the pivot a so as to lie in the direction of the diagonal of the above mentioned rug or mat. The studs 1) are then screwed up and by means of the holes b the device is sewed, pinned or laced to the under side of the rug with the felt side out. Upon laying the rug upon the floorit will be found always to retain -its flat position thereon and will not curl up at the edges.

The purpose of the felt is to prevent this device making a noise when used upon ahard wood floor.

I do not, desire to limitmyself to a single form of this device which may be made of many materials and in many patterns, all

having the same functions.

Having thus briefly described my invention,

I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 6 ent- 1. In a rug holder extensible arms pivotally joined, as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. A rug holder consisting of a plurality of extensible arms pivotally joined each provided with one or more holes at each extremity as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In a rug holder a plurality of arms each consisting of an inner connecting bar and outer extension bars substantially as described.

4. In a rug holder two arms pivotallyjoined and having attached to the under side thereof strips of felt or other cushioning material as and for the purposes set forth.

5. -A rug holder consisting of a plurality of extensible arms pivotally joined and provided on the under side with strips of felt or other cushioning material and at the outer ends thereof with a means for fastening the arms to the corners of a rugas and for the purposes described.
